Job description

Member of Technical Staff - Electrical Engineer

Location: New York, NY - Onsite
Employment Type: Full-time
Team: Electrical Engineering

About the Role

We are building and deploying humanoid robots designed to operate on real factory floors and perform meaningful work in demanding production environments. The arms are central to that mission, and none of that capability is possible without robust electronics that power, connect, sense, and control the machine.

We are looking for a Member of Technical Staff (Electrical Engineer) to own the electrical backbone of our humanoid and robotic arm platforms, including power distribution, custom PCBs, sensing, communications, interconnects, and harnessing.

As a Member of Technical Staff (Electrical Engineer), you will take electrical boards and subsystems from first-principles power budgets and schematics through PCB layout, bring-up, testing, design-for-manufacturing, and deployment on physical robots.

This is a hands-on senior individual contributor position for a Member of Technical Staff (Electrical Engineer) who enjoys working close to the hardware and has shipped real robotic or electromechanical electronics. You should care deeply about power integrity, thermal headroom, signal integrity, component derating, connector selection, and reliable system-level integration.

You will work closely with mechanical, controls, and firmware engineers. Your electrical systems will provide the clean power, reliable communications, and trustworthy signals those teams depend on to build high-performance robotic systems.

What You'll Do
  • Own the electrical design of robotic arms and humanoids end-to-end, including power distribution boards, motor-driver and sensor PCBs, interconnects, and harnesses.
  • Design power distribution and conditioning systems covering battery and bus inputs, fusing and protection, emergency-stop and safety circuits, DC-DC conversion, and clean power rails for compute, actuators, and sensors.
  • Design and lay out custom multilayer PCBs, including mixed-signal, high-current, and high-speed digital designs.
  • Own schematic capture, component selection, PCB layout, BOM development, and design decisions with a strong focus on power and signal integrity.
  • Integrate motor drivers, gate drivers, and current sensing for BLDC actuators.
  • Partner with controls and firmware engineers to achieve reliable torque and position control on physical hardware.
  • Develop sensing and signal chains for encoders, force/torque sensors, IMUs, and current and voltage monitoring.
  • Design analog front ends, ADC interfaces, and associated signal-conditioning circuits.
  • Develop communication and power architectures across the robot using technologies such as EtherCAT, CAN/CAN-FD, RS-485, SPI, I2C, and USB.
  • Design reliable electrical interconnects and cable harnesses for robotic systems.
  • Perform power budgeting, thermal analysis, EMI/EMC analysis, component derating, and protection against brownouts, transients, and electrical faults.
  • Bring up boards on the bench using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, bench supplies, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Debug electrical issues at both board and system level and perform root-cause analysis of failures.
  • Drive design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly across electrical hardware.
  • Work with PCB fabrication and assembly partners to scale designs from prototype builds to production.
  • Define and execute electrical test plans, performance characterization, and life/reliability testing.
  • Lead design reviews, establish electrical engineering standards, and contribute to raising the technical bar across the team.
Required Qualifications
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and shipping electronics or electrical hardware; advanced degrees may offset some professional experience requirements.
  • Direct, hands-on experience designing electronics for robots or comparable electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with humanoids, cobots, robotic arms, drones or aerospace systems, EVs and motor drives, medical devices, or other power-and-motion platforms.
  • Deep expertise in PCB design, including schematic capture and multilayer layout using a major EDA platform such as Altium, KiCad, Cadence/OrCAD, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of power and signal integrity.
  • Strong power-electronics fundamentals, including power distribution, DC-DC conversion, battery and bus systems, protection, fusing, and powering motors and compute from shared electrical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with motor-drive and actuator electronics, including BLDC drivers, gate drivers, current sensing, and power-stage/controller interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital design, mixed-signal systems, sensing, and signal conditioning.
  • Experience with common robotics communication interfaces such as CAN, EtherCAT, SPI, I2C, and RS-485.
  • Strong design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly mindset, with experience designing electronics that can be fabricated, assembled, sourced, and supported reliably.
  • Comfortable working on the bench with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, bench supplies, and other electrical test equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take electrical designs from schematic through validation and into manufacturable, shipped hardware.
Nice to Have
  • Battery systems and BMS experience, including pack integration, charging, and safety.
  • High-current or high-power electronics experience and familiarity with associated thermal and PCB-layout challenges.
  • Embedded firmware experience, particularly C/C++ on STM32 or comparable microcontrollers.
  • Experience bringing up custom boards and debugging embedded hardware/software interactions.
  • EMI/EMC design and pre-compliance testing for electrically noisy, motion-heavy systems.
  • Functional safety experience for machinery or robotics, including ISO 13849 or IEC 61508.
  • Experience designing emergency-stop and safety-rated circuits.
  • Thermal design experience for densely packaged actuator and power electronics.
  • Experience integrating force/torque sensors, encoders, and IMUs at the electrical and signal level.
  • High-speed digital design experience involving compute, cameras, or high-bandwidth sensors.
  • FPGA experience for real-time sensing or motor-control applications.
  • Experience scaling hardware from prototype through volume manufacturing with contract manufacturers and PCBA partners.
  • Sufficient controls and firmware knowledge to design a clean, controllable electrical system and communicate effectively with adjacent engineering teams.
What We're Looking For

The ideal Member of Technical Staff (Electrical Engineer) combines deep electrical engineering fundamentals with strong practical hardware judgment. You should enjoy moving between schematics, PCB layouts, calculations, laboratory testing, debugging, and physical robots.

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of electrical systems from first principles through production, is comfortable investigating difficult hardware failures, and cares about building electronics that continue to perform reliably outside the lab.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to building an inclusive and equal-opportunity workplace.
