Job description

About Valar Atomics

At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.

The Team

You will be joining Valar Atomics' Electrical Engineering team, embedded within the broader Fuel Manufacturing engineering group. The team delivers the electrical infrastructure that powers Valar's fuel manufacturing facilities — from utility interconnection through MV distribution, process area LV systems, and emergency power. You will work alongside I&C, mechanical, and nuclear safety engineers in a collaborative environment that demands technical precision and a strong safety culture, with the opportunity to contribute to some of the most technically interesting power distribution challenges in the advanced nuclear sector.

The Role

Valar Atomics is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the design and delivery of MV/LV electrical systems for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities. The role will contribute to electrical system design, power system studies, equipment selection, drawings, specifications, and field support while working closely with senior electrical engineers and multidisciplinary teams. This is an opportunity to work on first-of-a-kind industrial facilities and develop hands-on experience with complex electrical systems in the nuclear industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain electrical load lists and support power system studies including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, motor starting, and harmonic analysis using SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or equivalent.
  • Prepare arc flash hazard analysis in accordance with IEEE 1584 and substation grounding calculations in accordance with IEEE 80.
  • Assist with sizing and selection of transformers, cables, switchgear, bus systems, capacitor banks, UPS systems, and batteries.
  • Develop and update single line diagrams for MV and LV distribution systems from the utility interface through MCCs and final distribution equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain electrical equipment layouts, cable schedules, tray routing, and underground duct bank designs.
  • Support specifications and data sheets for MV switchgear, LV switchboards, MCCs, distribution panelboards, transformers, bus ducts, VFDs, UPS systems, and standby generators.
  • Support electrical area classification drawings and selection of equipment for hazardous areas in accordance with NEC/CEC 500 or IEC 60079 series.
  • Assist with protection coordination studies, time-current coordination plots, relay settings, and selection of protection and metering equipment.
  • Develop and review electrical drawings including relay panel arrangements, DC control schematics, MCC control wiring diagrams, and distribution system details.
  • Support technical evaluations of electrical equipment and vendor bids; review vendor drawings, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Support electrical installation specifications and participate in pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including insulation testing, continuity checks, relay secondary injection, and equipment energization.
  • Coordinate with I&C engineers on motor, VFD, and electrical control interfaces and with civil and structural engineers on substation layouts, equipment foundations, cable routing, and penetrations.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and other multidisciplinary engineering activities.
  • Support resolution of technical questions from vendors, contractors, and field teams.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, reports, drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation under the direction of senior electrical engineers.
  • Apply applicable electrical codes and standards to engineering designs and support the development of consistent electrical design practices.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 1+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably in industrial, process, power generation, energy, or other complex facilities.
  • Experience with MV/LV electrical distribution systems and fundamental electrical engineering principles.
  • Experience with power system analysis software such as SKM Power Tools, ETAP, EasyPower, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with electrical design deliverables including single line diagrams, load lists, equipment specifications, cable schedules, and electrical layouts.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, such as NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, CSA, and/or IEC.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • EIT designation or active pursuit thereof.
  • Experience with industrial or process facility electrical systems.
  • Experience with MV switchgear, substations, transformers, MCCs, VFDs, UPS systems, or standby power systems.
  • Experience performing or supporting load flow, short circuit, motor starting, arc flash, or protection coordination studies.
  • Familiarity with hazardous area classification and equipment requirements.
  • Experience with DC systems and battery sizing.
  • Familiarity with nuclear facility electrical design or nuclear quality/classification requirements.
  • Experience with IEC 61850 or substation automation and protection systems.
  • Experience with utility interconnection studies or utility electrical interfaces
