Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join the EPDS team in Cambridge, MA. You will coordinate electrical design projects for SPARC’s high‑power systems, interfacing with R&D, construction, manufacturing, and software teams to ensure high‑quality design releases on schedule.

  • Execute installation and testing of complex high power electrical systems for SPARC’s pulsed and steady state power system.
  • Develop technical requirements for vendor electrical equipment based on simulations and analysis of the SPARC power system.
  • Develop and implement test methods and test plans to qualify newly developed electrical designs.
  • Lead the installation, test, and operations handover for electrical designs.
  • Lead electrical work package releases (equipment list, drawings, schematics).
  • Apply core electrical engineering knowledge to design and improve high power systems.
  • Develop control narratives, concept of operations, and commissioning procedures for newly developed electrical systems.
  • Interface with SPARC cross functional teams to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Support vendor coordination and quote procurement.
  • Apply best electrical safety practices & compliance standards in design and implementation.
  • Work on advanced development to develop in-house electrical power technologies.

Join the power movement as an Electrical Engineer

Electrical Engineer reporting to the Manager of Power System Team in the Electrical Power Distribution System (EPDS) team at CFS. Responsible for assisting and lead the coordinate electrical design projects and interface with cross-function stakeholders while ensuring a high-quality execution of design release that meets specifications and project timelines.

What you’ll do
  • Execute installation and testing of complex high power electrical systems for SPARC’s pulsed and steady state power system
  • Develop technical requirements for vendor electrical equipment based on simulations and analysis of the SPARC power system
  • Develop and implement test methods and test plans to qualify newly developed electrical designs
  • Lead the installation, test, and operations handover for electrical designs
  • Lead electrical work package releases (equipment list, drawings, schematics)
  • Apply core electrical engineering knowledge and experience to design and improve high power systems (including but not limited to switchgear, transformers, switchboards, panelboards, reactors, semiconductor devices, cooling systems and control systems)
  • Develop control narratives, concept of operations, and commissioning procedures for newly developed electrical systems
  • Interface with SPARC cross functional teams including R&D, physics, construction, manufacturing, software, test, compliance & commissioning, etc. to ensure all requirements are met
  • Support vendor coordination and quote procurement
  • Apply best electrical safety practices & compliance standards in design and implementation
  • Work on advanced development to develop in-house electrical power technologies for the future of CFS
What we’re looking for
  • 5+ years of related experience with bachelor’s degree (or) a master’s degree with 2+ years of experience with electrical distribution systems or battery based systems
  • Ability to work with a technical team from conception of ideas through implementation in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven experience working on a team while also contributing technically to engineering projects
  • Experience in design and implementation of power systems in the electrical power industry
  • Experience with Medium Voltage & Low Voltage systems (AC/DC power distribution, power conversion, energy storage solutions)
  • Experience with modeling, simulation and analysis backed with validation via functional testing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to conduct design reviews, organize and present results to both expert and non-technical audiences
  • Results driven and ability to embrace and convince stakeholders of a change in design direction in pursuit of a high-quality product release
  • Familiarity with the National Electric Code & IEEE standards for 3ph power systems
  • Experience with writing technical specifications for electrical equipment
  • The candidate should specialize in electrical system execution in a construction setting
Bonus points for
  • Experience in practical application of electrical engineering skills to construction, manufacturing, testing and field installations
  • Experience with energy storage (batteries, capacitors etc.)
  • Experience in problem solving, root cause analysis and field containment actions
  • Experience with hands on prototype build, prototype testing and documentation of results
  • Experience with MFiles, NX (2D and 3D), Teamcenter
  • Experience with ETAP, SKM, and/or Easypower and protective relay programming (acSELerator)
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Aveva Electrical, NX(2D and 3D), Bluebeam, and creation of electrical design drawings such as Single Lines, Panel Schedules and Electrical Schematic Diagrams
  • Experience with grounding, bonding and lightning protection design
  • Experience with AC industrial power distribution design, including emergency power backup systems like emergency diesel generators and uninterruptible power supplies
Must-have Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Perform activities such as standing, typing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
