Job summary

Sierra Lobo, Inc. seeks an Electrical Reliability Engineer to join the Maintenance Operations team at NASA Langley Research Center.

You will troubleshoot electrical systems, perform RCFA/FMEA analyses, and implement preventive maintenance strategies to ensure mission-critical reliability. Ideal candidates hold a BS in Electrical Engineering with 2–5 years of related experience, excellent communication skills, and familiarity with CMMS Maximo.

Responsibilities

Job description

Overview

Sierra Lobo offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This position will be located at NASA’s Langley Research Center.

Responsibilities
  • The successful candidate will join the Maintenance Operations team to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE) located at NASA Langley Research Center.
  • The position reports directly to the Maintenance and Reliability Engineer Manager and requires a high level of quality, professionalism, and adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Support maintenance and operations teams with troubleshooting and resolution of electrical, power distribution, control, and instrumentation system issues in both normal and emergent conditions.
  • Analyze equipment failures and recurring issues, lead root cause analyses, and develop corrective and preventive actions to prevent repeat failures.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for electrical assets, including motors, drives, switchgear, controls, and related systems.
  • Review, create, and update electrical job plans, maintenance procedures, and preventive maintenance tasks to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Provide electrical engineering support for equipment repairs, system upgrades, and capital improvement projects from design through execution.
  • Identify equipment reliability risks and obsolescence concerns, and recommend design changes, process improvements, or replacement strategies.
  • Support commissioning, testing, and turnover of new or modified electrical systems, ensuring systems meet design intent and operational requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, industry standards, and site safety requirements, including support of audits and inspections.
  • Collaborate closely with reliability, mechanical, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives and support reliability‑centered maintenance efforts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Prefer experience in a utility or research environment and familiarity with CMMS systems and asset management tools (specifically IBM Maximo).
Qualifications

U.S. Citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. A BS degree in Electrical Engineering or an appropriate discipline and 2‑5 years of related engineering experience, or an MS degree and 1‑3 years of related engineering experience, or a Ph.D. and 0‑1 year of experience from an accredited engineering school, plus a working knowledge of maintenance and reliability requirements for mechanical systems, are required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience in Microsoft Office applications are required.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify failure causes for mechanical systems.
  • Failure analysis including preservation of evidence techniques.
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Engineering design standards and their application.
  • Reliability engineers are encouraged to attain CMRP certification (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional).
Essential Functions and Physical Requirements
  • Work Environment: Office (45%) and Test Environment (45%) with exposure to high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals, and industrial facility environments. Travel between facilities/test operations (10%).
  • Physical Requirements: Mobility to enter all areas of test facilities; ability to crawl, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, work at elevated levels on platforms and scaffolding; ability to walk, stand, bend, twist, and sit for extended periods, and lift up to 35 lbs.
Equipment And Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.) and knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. (50%) plus safety and personal protective equipment (20%).

Attendance

Regular attendance mandatory (100%). Overtime/work outside normal schedule required (~10%).
