Job description

Ocean Aero is an award-winning US company that has created the world’s first and only environmentally powered Autonomous Underwater and Surface Vehicle (AUSV). Ocean Aero’s autonomous marine robot, the Triton, operates exclusively on wind and solar energy and performs long endurance missions on the ocean surface with the ability to dive below the waves for underwater operations. The Triton uses a complex array of custom-built sensors, marinized electronics and software systems to operate, sense and communicate in the environment.

Ocean Aero has a collaborative culture with plenty of opportunities for growth and ownership.

Role Description

The Electrical Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and testing electrical subsystems and subassemblies for the Ocean Aero Triton. This role suits a well-rounded engineer with strong fundamentals, hands-on problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn across hardware disciplines. Work may span sensors, signal conditioning, logic-level translation, embedded hardware, communications, and power conversion and distribution, including efficiency, protection, and noise considerations. Candidates need not have experience in every area, but should be able to learn from datasheets, application notes, and design reviews.

The Electrical Engineer will be working alongside a team of creative engineers with a diverse set of backgrounds and skills. Ocean Aero has a collaborative culture with plenty of opportunities for growth and ownership. This role will report to the Director of Engineering.

Role Responsibilities
  • Work with the Mechanical Engineer, Software Engineer, and Mission Operations Specialist teams to design, assemble, test, document, and certify vehicle subsystems
  • Design, improve, and implement electrical subsystems and subassemblies ensuring reliability and efficiency
  • Select components, evaluate design tradeoffs, and participate in schematic, PCB layout, and interface reviews
  • Strong foundation in electrical engineering fundamentals and the ability to apply them to unfamiliar hardware problems.
  • Support product releases to manufacturing and customer deployments
  • Identify and resolve design issues, providing technical support for Testing and Fabrication Teams
  • Prepare and maintain schematics, BOMs, fabrication and assembly files, cable drawings, test procedures and records, and support manufacturing and resolve build issues.
Role Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Familiar with cable design and electrical interconnect fundamentals
  • Work with Software and Firmware engineers to define electrical requirements and interfaces and integrate processors, sensors, communications modules, and vehicle subsystems.
  • Ability to think independently about creative solutions to design problems
  • Team player, with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Commitment to rigorous testing practices and design process flows
  • Ability to travel occasionally, as needed
  • Maintain a valid driver license and personal vehicle insurance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance
  • Possess a valid Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) or successfully pass the requirements to obtain one
  • Ability to pass drug screen, background check, and motor vehicle screening
Role Preferences
  • Ability to methodically investigate hardware problems, form and test hypotheses, and document findings
  • Experience with cable splices, potting materials epoxy/polyurethane, submersible electronics
  • General interest in robotics
  • Hands‑on experience with schematic capture and PCB design, with the ability to develop designs through prototyping, bring‑up, and review
  • Capable of assembling electronic components and perform hand solder or surface mount component reflowing
  • Familiarity with Python or a similar scripting language for test automation, data collection, and hardware validation
  • Familiarity with embedded hardware, microcontrollers or processor modules, and hardware/firmware integration; STM32 experience is a plus
  • Circuit simulation experience (such as SPICE) and familiarity with C or C++ are helpful
  • Experience with the marine environment and systems (including ROVs, UUVs, USVs)
  • Familiarity with common electronics test equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and bench power supplies. Experience developing test fixtures, automating tests, or performing electronics assembly and rework is a plus
  • Experience with driving stepper motors, linear actuators, servos, and brushless motors
  • Knowledge of common hardware interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, RS-232/422/485, USB, or Ethernet, and the ability to learn others
