MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.

We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain- from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves- enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI- the convergence of computation, movement, and control.

We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer- and our people are driving that transformation.

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Electrical Engineer to join our growing Electrical Engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to be at the forefront of a greenfield project where you'll design, develop, and optimize complex electrical systems that support a wide range of chemical, mechanical, and thermal processes. You'll work cross-functionally with controls, operations, and mechanical engineering teams to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable infrastructure.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in power distribution, system design, and industrial electrical standards, with the ability to take projects from concept through construction, commissioning, and operation.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and support of low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems for new facility construction, process expansions, and equipment upgrades- managing all phases from concept through commissioning to full operation.

  • Prepare comprehensive electrical 2D design documentation, including Single-line diagrams and schematics, Load and power distribution layouts, Grounding and lightning protection systems, Cable and conduit routing plans, Panel schedules, PLC/control panel layouts, Network diagrams and P&IDs. All using tools such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.

  • Review and approve vendor and contractor submittals, ensuring alignment with project specifications, safety standards, and applicable electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEEE).

  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (process, mechanical, controls, and civil) to ensure electrical systems are integrated effectively and designed to meet all project, safety, and regulatory requirements.

  • Support other engineers by developing design documentation, electrical calculations, technical reports, and specifications as required.

  • Assist in system-level analysis, including load calculations, short-circuit studies, arc flash assessments, and protective device coordination using tools like SKM PowerTools.

  • Contribute to the creation and enforcement of internal electrical design standards, templates, and documentation protocols.

  • Provide field engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup, including resolving RFIs, reviewing redlines, and ensuring as-built accuracy.

  • Develop and maintain maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for electrical infrastructure to support safe and efficient long-term operations.

  • Participate in interpreting and applying industry codes, standards, and best practices, such as NEC, IEEE, IEC, OSHA, and NRTL guidelines.

  • Ensure all electrical projects meet MP Materials' expectations for safety, reliability, quality, and sustainability.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in electrical design, preferably in an industrial, chemical, or manufacturing environment.

  • Proficient with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical for schematic and layout design.

  • Working knowledge of electrical codes and standards: NEC, IEEE, IEC, OSHA, NRTL, and UL.

  • Experience designing and reviewing control panels, distribution panels, and motor control systems.

  • Understanding of power system components, including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, UPS, and backup generators.

  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment specifications, and process flow diagrams.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across disciplines and with field technicians.

  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Desired Qualities

  • EIT certification or ability to obtain.

  • Experience with SKM PowerTools or similar software for power studies.

  • Familiarity with 3D design tools such as SolidWorks, Navisworks, or Revit.

  • Understanding of medium-voltage distribution systems (4.16kV, 13.8kV, etc.).

  • Knowledge of safety instrumented systems (SIS) and industrial electrical reliability practices.

  • Field experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup of electrical systems.

  • Proven ability to manage priorities across multiple projects and deliver high-quality work under deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
