Job summary

Integral Engineering Group, LLC is seeking an Electrical Designer to create electrical, controls, and instrument system designs for projects. You will work with engineers to develop plans, prepare documentation, and ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, and local codes.

Travel is limited and the role requires strong CAD skills. Responsibilities include on-site surveys, coordination with suppliers and contractors, and maintaining rigorous documentation such as BOMs and specifications.

Qualifications

  • 2 year technical degree required.
  • 4-15 years of experience with design/specification of electrical power distribution, industrial control systems (PLC, DCS).
  • Experience participating in multi‑discipline design efforts and producing electrical packages.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and preparing electrical drawings and plans for various projects. This role involves collaborating with engineers and other disciplines to ensure that all electrical, controls, and instrument system designs meet project requirements, codes, and standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop electrical and controls system designs, schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts using CAD software, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Work closely with engineers, project managers, and other team members to develop electrical plans that align with project goals and requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for all electrical and control system designs, including technical specifications, bill of materials (BOM), and other related documents.
  • Ensure all designs adhere to relevant electrical codes, standards, and regulations, including NEC, IEEE, and local codes.
  • Review and verify the accuracy and completeness of electrical drawings and plans, making revisions as necessary to meet project needs.
  • Conduct on-site surveys and/or walkdowns to assess existing electrical systems and gather data to inform design decisions.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure project objectives are met and any issues are promptly addressed.
  • Identify and troubleshoot design issues during the planning and execution phases, proposing effective solutions to ensure project success.
  • Assist in project scheduling, cost estimation, and coordination with other disciplines as needed.
  • Manage project requirements, including extraction of requirements from higher level design criteria, the definition of applicable functional and operational requirements, flow-down to design documents & procurement specifications, and verification matrix activities prior to equipment startup.
  • Coordinate work with suppliers, subcontractors, fabrication, maintenance and/or construction firms.
  • Perform peer-review or formal design verification of design output documents.
  • Promote a professional code of conduct and ethical behavior.
  • Provide technical direction and trouble-shooting skills.

Education and Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2 year Technical Degree
  • 4-15 years of experience with design/specification of electrical power distribution, industrial control systems (i.e. PLC, DCS), and related equipment.
  • Experience participating in multi-discipline (i.e. mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/controls, HVAC, piping, welding, etc.) design efforts and producing electrical packages, including electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, etc.
  • Strong understanding of CAD modeling software and drawings, such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, or similar design software.
  • Experience with applicable national standards (i.e. National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), IEEE, NEMA, PIP, IEC, ISA, and other industry codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a project team environment and communicate well with other disciplines, customers, and stakeholders. IE Group is a hybrid workforce and collaborative use of communication tools is necessary.
  • Ability to perform work duties to defined project schedules.
  • Must be a US Persons status
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge, if needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing industrial control systems (PLC and DCS). Experience programming, debugging, and commissioning a plus.
  • Experience designing industrial power distribution and motor control systems (480V or higher).
  • Experience performing lightning protection and grounding system design.
  • Experience performing NEC and circuit related calculations (i.e. conduit fill, conductor, OCPD, overload, voltage drop…etc.).
  • Experience designing industrial control networks (i.e. ethernet, serial) and familiarity with industrial control protocols such as Modbus or Ethernet IP.

Location: Knoxville, TN

Travel Requirements:

  • Less than 10% with expenses reimbursed for approved team meetings and project walk-down activities

Clearance Requirements:

  • Preferred, not required. Candidate must be willing and able to apply for a clearance upon hire.

Work Hours:

  • A Full time, 40-hour work week is scheduled with option for 8 or 9 hour workday.
  • Approved overtime paid as straight time OT
