Job summary

Southern States, LLC is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer with expertise in embedded systems design and development. You will work on hardware and firmware for embedded MCU or SOM, and collaborate across engineering teams to deliver robust solutions.

The role prefers 2+ years of embedded hardware experience and familiarity with PCB design, testing and production readiness, including EMI/EMC considerations and interface standards such as I2C, SPI, RS-485/RS-232.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
• 2+ years of embedded hardware development.
• Experience with PCB and hardware interface design of embedded MCU or SOM.
• Working knowledge of test tools including oscilloscopes, DMM and lab power supplies.
• Troubleshooting experience such as board bring-up, EMI/EMC, or environmental issues.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the research, design, development and modification of digital and analog hardware, systems, and electrical components
• Build embedded systems including hardware, basic board test firmware
• Develop embedded systems hardware from prototypes to certification testing and production
• Coordinate with team members to establish basic design approaches
• Analyze and assist in developing approaches to meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and other requirements
• Create CAD schematics, PCB layouts, and detailed documentation for new products
• Conduct testing of existing and prototype product designs to diagnose malfunctions and make routine improvements
• Interface with outside resources such as PCB prototype houses and contract manufacturers

Summary:

The Electrical Design Engineer will have expertise in embedded systems design and development and worked for 2+ years on embedded systems teams. It is beneficial if this person has knowledge of electric power transmission and distribution systems.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in the research, selection, design, development and modification of digital and analog hardware, systems, and electrical components


• Build embedded systems including hardware, basic board test firmware


• Responsible for the development of embedded systems hardware, from prototypes to certification testing and production


• Coordinate with team members to establish basic design approaches


• Analyze and assist in developing approaches to meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and other requirements for new or improved products


• Create CAD schematics, PCB layouts, and detailed documentation for new products


• Conduct testing of existing and prototype product designs to diagnose malfunctions and make routine improvements or modifications to produce desired results

Requirements:

• Minimum of bachelors' degree in electrical engineering (or related field), or military training equivalent.


• At least 2 years of embedded hardware development


• Experience with PCB and hardware interface design of embedded MCU or SOM


• Working knowledge of test tools; oscilloscopes, DMM, lab-type power supplies, serial port communications, and data analysis


• Troubleshooting experience such as board bring-up, EMI/EMC, or environmental issues


• Experience with wireless ISM communications


• Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written


• Self-motivated and passionate about embedded systems

Strongly Prefer:

• Experience with mitigation of harsh electrical environment effects on MCU designs


• Experience in electric power industry


• Experience with hardware interfaces such as ethernet, RS-485, RS-232, I2C, SPI, and GPIO
