Job description

As a Switchgear Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and engineering of UL 891 low-voltage switchgear systems, with a focus on busbar systems, control schemes, and integrated electrical/mechanical assemblies. This role combines electrical power system design with manufacturability and production optimization to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective products.

  • Key responsibilities include developing and validating busbar designs (ampacity, short-circuit withstand, thermal and mechanical performance), creating control schematics and interlocking logic, and ensuring compliance with NEC, UL, ANSI, and IEEE standards.
  • You will perform electrical analyses such as short-circuit and load evaluations, support equipment selection and protection schemes, and generate detailed engineering deliverables including single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, layouts, and bills of materials.
  • In addition, you will analyze and improve manufacturing processes, workflow, equipment layout, and space utilization to enhance efficiency and product quality for integrated electrical and mechanical systems. This includes close collaboration with fabrication teams on sheet metal design, enclosure integration, and assembly processes.
  • The role requires ownership of multiple concurrent projects, balancing technical design, production schedules, and cost considerations. You will interface regularly with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and suppliers to resolve technical issues, support production, and ensure successful project execution.
  • The ideal candidate brings a strong background in switchgear design, bus systems, controls engineering, and mechanical integration, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in an independent, fast-paced environment.
What will help you thrive in this role?
  • BSEE or other related technical degree required
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ work experience in a production engineering
  • Designed low-voltage switchgear bus systems, including sizing, spacing, and bracing based on ampacity and short-circuit requirements
  • Performed short-circuit, load flow, and voltage drop calculations to validate equipment ratings and system reliability
  • Developed single-line diagrams, control schematics, and wiring diagrams for switchgear and control panels
  • Engineered busbar layouts and configurations (copper/aluminum) to meet thermal, mechanical, and dielectric performance criteria
  • Created and implemented control logic and interlocking schemes for breaker operation, protection, and safety
  • Selected and specified circuit breakers, CTs/PTs, protective relays, and control components based on application requirements
  • Configured and applied protective relay settings and developed coordination studies using tools such as ETAP or SKM
  • Ensured compliance with ANSI, IEEE, IEC, UL, and NEC standards for switchgear design and safety
  • Produced bill of materials (BOMs), technical specifications, and customer submittal packages
  • Supported Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), verifying functionality and resolving issues
  • Collaborated with mechanical, manufacturing, and field teams to optimize design for constructability and performance
  • Reviewed vendor drawings and documentation to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with project specifications
  • Incorporated arc flash mitigation, grounding, and bonding practices into system designs
  • Managed engineering changes, RFIs, and project deliverables to meet schedule and budget requirements
  • Provided technical support during commissioning and troubleshooting of installed switchgear systems
  • Experience in ISO9001:2015and ERP operating environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills for developing and functioning in a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
