Job summary

Metrolina Greenhouses is seeking a Specialist Control Technician to manage PLC and automation system troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance across the facility. The technician will also assist with installation, implementation, and troubleshooting of newly designed automation systems, while managing work orders and collaborating with other departments for timely completion.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and Lockout/Tagout practices.

  • Identify and resolve alarms and faults quickly to minimize downtime.
  • Suggest and implement improvements to automation systems.

Job description

Position Summary

The Specialist Control technician will manage and assist with PLC and automated system troubleshooting for repair and preventative maintenance around the facility. The technician will also assist with the installation, implementation, and troubleshooting of newly designed automation systems. The technician will be responsible for managing work orders and projects and collaborating with other departments when necessary to ensure work orders are completed in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and complete assigned work orders through the maintenance management system in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical control panels, automation systems, and related equipment.
  • Coordinate and delegate tasks to assistant technicians and cross-functional departments to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Plan, manage, and complete automation and maintenance projects within established deadlines.
  • Respond promptly to operational support requests via email, phone, text, or other communication channels.
  • Monitor, maintain, and optimize automation equipment to ensure maximum reliability, efficiency, and uptime.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve automation equipment alarms and system faults as quickly as possible to minimize downtime.
  • Recommend and implement continuous improvements to automation systems that enhance performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, repairs, and project progress within the work order system.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management that support the goals and objectives of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Practical experience working with 480V and 208V electrical systems.
  • Practical experience troubleshooting and maintaining 24V AC/DC and 120VAC control systems.
  • Experience installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining variable frequency drives (VFDs), three-phase motors, and pumps.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial automation electrical components, including relays, contactors, overloads, switches, and related control devices.
  • Experience working with process automation instrumentation, including pressure transducers, flow meters, sensors, and other control devices.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work orders, preventive maintenance, and prioritizing critical equipment repairs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
  • Advanced knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, three-phase motor, and conveyor systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and inverter programming, configuration, and system integration.
  • Thorough understanding of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and OSHA safety regulations, with a strong commitment to workplace safety.
Job Setting & Physical Demands

This position is primarily outdoors but may be required to work between locations and within an indoor office environment for administrative duties, which may require the use of computers and standard office equipment. Fluency to read, write, and understand the English language is required. Must be able to work in all outdoor elements, including dust and allergens. Position requires long-term ability for standing, sitting, squatting, bending, reaching, and twisting on a regular basis to fulfill essential duties. Candidate must have the ability to operate all machinery necessary within the department and across the facility, including but not limited to operating the table lifter and get certified and operate on internal vehicles. Candidate will also be regularly required to work at heights above 6 feet. Employee must have the ability to lift 35 pounds unaided, and regularly lift up to 80 pounds with assistance.
