Job summary

BW Converting, part of Barry-Wehmiller, is seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to design and maintain complex control systems for converting machinery. You will work on OEM equipment, applying engineering principles, and ensuring safety, reliability, and quality in every build.

Ideal candidates have a BSEE and 3–5 years in controls engineering, with Rockwell PLC experience and proficiency in CAD tools. Occasional travel to customer sites may be required, contributing to a global engineering

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is required.
  • Three to five years of experience in Controls Engineering; manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Control (PLC) programming (Rockwell preferred).
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical layouts; CAD knowledge helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer machinery controls, original design and BOM preparation.
  • Optimize design and implement control system architecture (hardware, software, instrumentation, networking).
  • Write functional requirement specifications including servo control, safety interlocks and alarms.
  • Contribute ideas for new product design and development; train other engineers as needed.
  • Test and debug equipment to isolate defects; travel to customer sites as required.

Job Description:

Be part of a dynamic engineering team utilizing the latest technology to develop equipment in an OEM environment. The candidate will be using engineering principles and design software, to help design, develop, and maintain electrical control systems to required specifications, focusing on economy, safety, reliability, quality, and sustainability.

Essential Functions:
  • Engineer machinery controls that are extensive and complex, involving original design work and selecting components and materials.
  • Ability to optimize design and implement knowledge of control system architecture including hardware, software, instrumentation, and networking equipment.
  • Proficient ability to understand control philosophy and write functional requirement specifications including description of servo control, safety interlocks and alarms.
  • Contribute sound professional advice and creative new ideas, concepts and approaches relative to new product design and development projects.
  • Counsel and train other engineers in technical areas as required.
  • Test and debug equipment to isolate defects.
  • Collaborate within a global team of engineers from North America, Italy, and India.
  • Prepare schematics and bills of material (BOM) for moderately complex equipment. Eplan experience is a plus.
  • Support manufacturing/assembly teams.
  • May travel to customer sites to support field teams with technical assistance as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:

Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required Three to five years of experience in Controls Engineering Manufacturing experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Control (PLC) programming (Prefer Rockwell) required
  • Strong logical, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical assembly layouts
  • Experience in programming ControlLogix platform using Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk
  • Ability to read and interpret moderately complex electrical schematics and mechanical assembly layouts
  • Working knowledge of CAD (E-Plan and/or AutoCAD) and engineering systems.
  • Web handling, tension control, rewinding, unwinding understanding.
  • Software programming and control theory education and experience.
  • Servo Drive parameterization, programming, and tuning. (Prefer Rockwell and Bosch-Rexroth)
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) programming. (Prefer Rockwell)
  • Other software experience (e.g. Ignition, Python, Matlab)
  • Understanding of functional safety including ISO13849

Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Typically sits, grasps items and performs keyboarding for occasional operation of a computer Stand, walk, bend, reach or otherwise move about occasionally.
  • Lift, move, or otherwise transfer items up to 30 lbs. occasionally.
  • Occasional exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards.
  • Travel by air or car occasionally.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.
