Job summary

SJE in Birmingham, Alabama is seeking an Electrical/Control System Engineer I to design, test, implement, and complete projects on-site at our local office. The role focuses on electrical control panels, PLC/HMI work, and ensuring project specifications and budgets are met.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in electrical/computer engineering, basic software skills, and up to three years of related experience. Travel ~30% and a robust benefits package accompany the role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Basic computer software skills using Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, internet, AutoCAD.
  • Entry-level to three (3) years of related work experience.
  • Willingness and ability to learn technical skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to design, write, test software, and provide hardware services for small projects without significant supervision.
  • Knowledge and experience with specialized tools and test equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to interact with customers, vendors, employees, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical control panels and systems to meet project specifications and division design standards.
  • Coordinate with panel production personnel in fabrication of control panels.
  • Develop procedures and plans for factory and field testing of control panels and systems.
  • Develop PLC and HMI applications per project specifications using division/industry standards and best practices.
  • Direct activities to ensure manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems in field installations.
  • Technical document writing including testing procedures, training plans and sequence of operations.
  • Notify project and group managers of schedule/budget goal issues.
  • Request quotes from vendors and verify equipment meets specification requirements.
  • Provide customers with technical support via phone, remote access, and on‑site service.
  • Attend training and continuing education related to the industry.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.

The Job

The Electrical/Control System Engineer I will work on‑site, Monday through Friday, from our Birmingham, Alabama office. The role involves designing, testing, implementing, and completing projects while meeting specifications and budget requirements.

Experience, Educational, and Ability Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
