Job summary

Pratt Industries is seeking an experienced Electrical & Instrumentation Technician to install, service, troubleshoot, and maintain mill equipment in our Valparaiso, IN facility. This hands‑on role covers PLCs, distributed control systems, motors, and pneumatic controls to keep the paper mill running at peak performance.

Responsibilities include diagnostics, electrical wiring, reading diagrams, and operating safety protocols. Strong math, manual dexterity, and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

  • 2- to 4-year degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and perform basic to intermediate math.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and operate motorized equipment safely.
  • Adherence to lockout/tag out procedures and plant safety policies.

Responsibilities

  • System Diagnostics: Troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic problems on process equipment.
  • Electrical Expertise: Repairing/wiring 120V, 460V AC, and 24V DC circuits; install/maintain distribution systems, transformers, and controls.
  • Advanced Equipment: Service PLCs, distributed control systems, motors, motor control centers, cranes, and guide systems.
  • Reading and Interpretation: Read P&ID, hydraulic, pneumatic, and wiring diagrams.
  • Precision Work: Use multimeter and Megohm meter; run/bend conduit; wire motors per codes.
  • Safe Operations: Rack in/out high-voltage breakers (460V, 4160V, 12.47kV).
  • Mobile Equipment: Operate forklifts, scissor/boom lifts, hoists, cranes for maintenance.
  • Continuous Learning: participate in ongoing educational/certificate training.

Electrical & Instrumentation Technician: Master the Systems that Power Our Mill!

You’ll work with everything from PLC's and distributed control systems to motors, transmitters, and advanced pneumatic controls. What You’ll Do And How You’ll Succeed


  • System Diagnostics: Troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic problems on a wide range of process equipment.

  • Electrical Expertise: Repairing and wiring 120V, 460V AC, and 24V DC circuits. Installing and maintaining distribution systems, transformers, and electrical controls like coils, contactors, and relays.

  • Advanced Equipment: Servicing and maintaining a variety of critical equipment, including PLCs, distributed control systems, overhead cranes, motors, motor control centers, and guide systems.

  • Reading and Interpretation: Skillfully interpreting P&ID, hydraulic, pneumatic, and wiring diagrams to ensure accurate installations and repairs.

  • Precision Work: Using a multimeter and Megohm meter to diagnose issues, running and bending conduit, and wiring motors according to applicable codes.

  • Safe Operations: Safely racking in and out high‑voltage breakers (460V, 4160V, and 12.47kV).

  • Mobile Equipment: Operating motorized equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, hoists, and cranes to support maintenance tasks.

  • Continuous Learning: Demonstrating a strong learning aptitude by participating in ongoing educational and certificate training programs.


What We're Looking For


  • Education and Experience: A 2- to 4-year degree from a college, university, technical school, military, vocational, or other advanced educational institution is preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered.

  • Mental & Physical Abilities: You must have the ability to read and understand technical manuals, perform basic to intermediate math, and communicate clearly. The role is physically demanding, requiring manual dexterity, lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, and the ability to operate motorized equipment safely.

  • Safety First: A meticulous approach to safety is mandatory. This includes following lockout/tag out procedures, wearing all required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and adhering to strict plant safety policies for energized circuits and other hazards.

  • Team Player: You'll be expected to communicate effectively with all personnel, assist with maintenance and operational tasks, and maintain a clean and safe work area.
