Job summary

Alabama State Department of Education seeks an EL Auxiliary Instructor to support K-2 English language learners. You will assist teachers, provide targeted instruction, and help learners reach proficiency in English, reading, and math.

Qualifications

  • Two years of higher education, Work Keys Test or CDA; those without CDA must obtain it or complete 9 hours of ECE courses.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Experience working with EL students is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals.
  • Assists teachers with instruction and learning opportunities for K-2 English language learners.
  • Provides instruction as prescribed by teacher or principal.
  • Assists in checking and evaluating students’ work and reinforces skills per guidelines.
  • Performs tasks to meet student needs as determined by teacher or principal.
  • Maintains confidentiality of school/workplace matters.
  • Shows initiative to identify problems and opportunities for improvement.
  • Reports potential problems or irregularities to administration.
  • Responds to inquiries and feedback in a timely, positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence timely and accurately.
  • Uses and cares for school resources and supervises others in care and use of equipment.
  • Collaborates effectively as a productive team member.
  • Serves on school committees and task forces as required.
  • Adheres to school policies and regulations.
  • Reports absences and takes leave per policy.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by teacher or principal.

Job Title: EL Auxiliary Instructor

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Goal:

1. To assist with targeted instruction and educational support for students who are not proficientEnglishspeakers,specificallyfocusingonstudentsingradesK-2.Toassist these students to achieve grade level proficiency in English language skills, reading and math.

Qualifications:
  • 1. Must meet one of the following qualifications: two years of higher education, successful passage of the Work Keys Test, or CDA.Those who do not currently hold the CDA must be willing to obtain it or be willing to complete 9 hours of early childhood education courses.
  • 2. AnAssociateDegreepreferred.
  • 3. ExperienceworkingwithELstudents, stronglypreferred.
  • 4. Demonstratedproficiencyinoralandwrittencommunicationwithstudents,parents and others.
  • 5. Effectiveinterpersonalskills,withanemphasisoncommunicationandcollaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.

PerformanceResponsibilitiesandEssentialFunctions:
  • 1. Demonstratessupportfor theschoolsystemanditsvision,goals,andpriorities.
  • 2. AssiststeacherswithinstructionandfacilitateslearningopportunitiesforK-2English language learners.
  • 3. Providesinstructionto studentsas prescribedbytheclassroom teacherorprincipal.
  • 4. Assists teachers in checking and objectivelyevaluating students’ work; works with studentsindividuallyandinsmallgroupsreinforcingskillsbaseduponinstructional guidelines; utilizes reading and math programs to build student academic skills, utilizesgames,storiesorothermanipulativestoenhancestudents’learningand English language skills.
  • 5. Performstasksconsistentwiththeneedsofthestudentasdeterminedbytheregular classroom teacher or principal.
  • 6. Maintainsappropriateconfidentialityregardingschool/workplacematters.
  • 7. Demonstratesinitiativeinidentifyingpotentialproblemsand/oropportunitiesfor improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • 8. Reportspotentialproblems,unusualevents,orworkirregularitiestoappropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • 9. Respondstoinquiries,requests,constructivefeedback,concernsand/orcomplaintsina timely and positive manner.
  • 10. Maintainsandsubmitsreports,records,andcorrespondenceinatimelyandaccurate manner.
  • 11. Properlyuses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system andeffectivelysupervisesandmonitorsothersinthecare,maintenance,anduseof tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • 12. Useseffectivecollaboration skillstoworkasaproductiveteammember.
  • 13. Servesonschoolsystemcommittees,taskforces,andrepresentativegroupsas required.
  • 14. Adherestoschoolsystemrules,administrativeprocedures,localBoardpolicies,and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • 15. ReportsabsencesandtakesleaveinaccordancewithBoardpolicies andprocedures.
  • 16. Performsanyotherjob-relateddutiesasassignedbytheregularclassroomteacheror principal.
Physical Demands
