Job summary

Natural Systems Utilities in California is seeking an Electrical Instrumentation Controls & Automation Apprentice to join the team. You will assist with installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining process control and electrical systems in water and wastewater plants, with on-the-job training and safety at the forefront.

This mobile role covers the entire state of CA and requires basic electrical knowledge, comfort with computers, and willingness to learn PLC concepts.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required.
  • General understanding of water and wastewater plant operations.
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays on occasion.
  • Must be able to safely work in confined spaces (training provided).
  • Must be able to safely handle chemicals (training provided).
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Medium to advanced computer skills highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hand and power tools for repairs.
  • Assist with site preparations for repairs.
  • Learn and excel in Electrical controls field.
  • Install, maintain, diagnose and repair low to high voltage wiring and motor controls.
  • Perform basic electrical work on control circuits and VFDs.
  • Carry out preventive and predictive maintenance.
  • Read blueprints and schematics.
  • Document work in CMMS with hours, parts, notes.
  • Support other craftsmen on work orders.
  • Maintain safety and NSU procedures.
  • Be available for 24-hour alarm response.
  • Communicate repair progress to stakeholders.
  • Read manuals and work orders to perform maintenance.
  • Operate a vehicle following safety policies.

SUMMARY

The Electrical Instrumentation Controls & Automation (EICA) Apprentice role works under the guidance of the PLC & Controls Technician and is responsible for performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain process control, electrical & automation equipment in water and wastewater plants. This role requires an eagerness to learn in the field of EICA, being comfortable with electricity, proficiency with computers and basic knowledge of PLC programming. This work is completed according to safety, predictive and productive maintenance systems and processes to support the achievement of the company’s business goals and objectives. This is a mobile position covering the whole State of CA where we have active projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate hand and power tools of all types: mechanical hoists, core drill, hammer drill, and a variety of other equipment and instruments.
  • Assist with site preparation for various repair projects.
  • Have a passion to learn and excel in the Electrical controls field.
  • Participates in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of low, medium and high voltage wiring systems and motors controls on various equipment.
  • Performs basic electrical work as related to control circuits, variable frequency drives, and motor controllers
  • Performs preventive and predictive maintenance and maintains tools, equipment and materials requirements for assigned projects.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, plans, and manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Provide detailed notes within NSU’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) system on hours worked, parts and materials used, and additional notes on work performed.
  • Assist other craft workers when needed in completion of work orders.
  • Perform general preventative and corrective maintenance on treatment plant equipment such as valve replacement, pump replacement, piping repairs, blower and compressor services.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with operations and materials, implement resolutions, and report any defects or unusual situations to the appropriate supervision.
  • Work conscientiously and be aware of all safety hazards, ensure safety of others, and follow all NSU’s and client safety procedures.
  • Available for 24-hour alarm response and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Effectively communicate the progress of repairs in a professional manner to employers, clients, visitors, or regulatory personnel.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.
  • Ability to work independently as required.
  • Maintain receipts and accurate records for fuel, mileage, timesheets, expenses, etc.
    Ensure adherence to current company safety training and standards at all times.
  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude with teammates, clients, regulatory agencies, etc.
  • Operate a motor vehicle in compliance with all NSU vehicle safety policies and applicable roadway laws.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 to $32.00.
