Job description

Most Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) jobs hand you a mature program and someone else's binder of procedures. This one hands you a new advanced-materials plant and asks you to build the program yourself, with Engineering, Facilities, Operations, Quality, and experienced outside environmental consultants working alongside you.

Pave Talent is hiring on behalf of our client, a long-established global specialty chemicals manufacturer. The new plant is part of a multi-site expansion driven by fast-growing demand in electronics, and it is scaling quickly from startup to full production.

  • Builders who would rather stand up EHS systems than maintain someone else's
  • EHS pros from regulated plants (chemical, semiconductor, battery, pharma) who know Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules
  • People comfortable working hands-on around industrial chemicals like flammable solvents and corrosives, with process safety first
  • Organized self-starters who can juggle permits, consultants, and commissioning at the same time
  • Clear communicators, as comfortable with regulators as with operators on the floor

If you want a mature plant with every process already dialed in, this is not your role.

This is the site's EHS role through startup and into production. As the plant grows, so does the program you built, and your scope with it. Nobody expects you to have done every item below before. We expect you to want to learn it, with consultants and an experienced team behind you.

  • Lead environmental permitting for air, stormwater, wastewater, and hazardous materials, including maximum allowable quantity (MAQ) evaluations, with outside consultants
  • Support commissioning and startup safety: Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), Management of Change (MOC), and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs)
  • Stand up OSHA programs: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication, Hot Work, Fall Protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), and Contractor Safety
  • Handle regulatory reporting (Toxics Release Inventory, Tier II, air, stormwater, wastewater) and hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
  • Run incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action tracking
  • Write procedures, deliver training, track metrics, and support ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Chemistry, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical field
  • 2 to 5 years of EHS experience in a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship, and able to work on-site five days a week
  • Hands-on permitting (air, stormwater, wastewater) or RCRA waste management
  • California regulations: Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA), Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), California Air Resources Board (CARB), Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD)
  • Process Safety Management (PSM), PHA, MOC, or ISO 14001/45001 experience
  • A prior greenfield plant startup
