Job summary

Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) seeks an experienced EHS professional to lead safety and environmental health programs at its Blair, Wisconsin facility. The role focuses on training, compliance, and continuous improvement in a high-safety culture.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s in safety-related field, 3–5 years of operational safety experience in production, and CPR/BLS or OSHA 511 credentials preferred. Strong collaboration with maintenance and QA is required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree in safety management or related field.
  • 3-5 years of safety leadership in a production environment, preferably food industry.
  • Certified Safety Professional with OSHA 511 is preferred.
  • First Responder and BLS training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety programs and enforce policies across the facility.
  • Administer OSHA-compliant training and promote safe work behaviors.
  • Manage industrial hygiene, waste, monitoring, and compliance records.
  • Conduct EHS inspections and implement corrective actions.
  • Oversee DOT files, drug screening, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, QA, and operations to minimize hazards.

Job description

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

AMPI owns six Midwest-based manufacturing plants where 10 percent of the nation’s American-type cheese and processed cheese is produced. The cooperative’s award-winning cheese and powdered dairy products are marketed to foodservice, retail and food ingredient customers. In 2019, the co-op launched its Dinner Bell Creamery brand and accompanying Co-op Crafted promise, highlighting more than 50 years of dairy farm families partnering with skilled cheesemakers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time:

  1. All AMPI employees have an obligation to report employee safety, food safety and food quality issues to personnel of authority.
  2. This position has a heightened food safety and food quality responsibilities.
  3. Directly support Environmental, Health and Safety at facility by training and enforcing safety programs and policies and initiatives.
  4. Administer continuous training programs that comply with OSHA regulations and develop safe work behaviors.
  5. Manage industrial hygiene programs including medical testing, physicals, respiratory testing, fit testing; and conducts monitoring of contaminants as required by respective standards.
  6. Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste inspections, identification, containerization, consolidation, labeling, accumulation and shipment for disposal and maintain records of such.
  7. Collect, document and record site EHS monitoring including, but not limited to, area noise measurements, carbon monoxide, heat exposure, and storm water samples.
  8. Apply the Company drug and alcohol testing program, complying with federal and state laws.
  9. Schedule and conduct site EHS compliance inspections, perform records documentation and provide corrective action response recommendations and tracking.
  10. Use a working knowledge of personal, industrial & occupational safety to manage safety programs such as Life Safety Code, Forklift Operations, Hoist & Crane Operations, Lifting Equipment, Job Safety Analysis, Blood borne Pathogen Exposure Control, Respiratory Protection, PPE Program, Hazard Communication and other OSHA required programs.
  11. Promote technical safety and occupational health awareness through internal company communications, such as newsletters, committee meetings, 5 minute safety talks, best practices, and specific training programs.
  12. Support maintenance, plant services and quality assurance to implement engineering controls and food safety while minimizing employee safety and occupational health hazards.
  13. Identify and develop corrective actions for potential hazards by auditing facilities, machinery and safety equipment.
  14. Manage DOT driver files, random drug screening and DOT documentation in the company’s electronic system.
  15. Utilize and analyze safety and health metrics, trend and data to understand what is working well and where gaps exist. Provide quick response and program reprioritization to prevent injuries and risks.
  16. Manage location’s workers compensation program closely monitoring claims, review reports, conduct timely and thorough investigations, identify corrective actions and ensure actions are complete.
  17. Complies, reports on time and maintains OSHA and environmental reporting and documentation.
  18. Maintain employee training and records for relevant occupational health and safety, environmental and DOT topics.
  19. Support effective two-way communications with all employees by championing safety committees, time on the floor and shift change EHS information.
  20. Build and maintain strong working relationships with brand owner leadership teams to drive accountability and continuous improvement.
  21. Build a partnership with brand owner leadership teams, ensuring best-in-class safety, quality, service, and cost performance.
  22. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Bachelor's degree in safety management, industrial health and safety, a discipline of safety engineering or related field from accredited college or university or a combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • Three to five years of experience managing and leading operational safety, preferably within the food industry with proven ability to deliver results.
  • Technical knowledge of fluid milk, cheese and drying operations is preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional with OSHA 511 course completion preferred.
  • First Responder, Basic Life Support Training preferred.
  • Understanding of the 1904 Recordkeeping Standards and 1910 General Industry Standards;
  • Knowledge of Investigations, Hazard recognition, Training, Recordkeeping, and Behavioral Safety.
