Job summary

Coherent Corp. Sherman, Texas facility seeks an experienced EHS leader to drive the site Environmental, Health, and Safety Management System in alignment with corporate standards and ISO-related requirements.

You will develop the EHS strategy, monitor performance, and coordinate improvements across production, lab, and utility areas. You will lead incident investigations, regulatory reporting, and contractor safety programs, while ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and state regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
• Five or more years of EHS management experience in a manufacturing, chemical, research, or other high-hazard industrial environment.
• Demonstrated experience managing EHS personnel and comprehensive EHS programs.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, Texas environmental requirements, and relevant industry standards.
• Experience with OSHA Process Safety Management in a covered manufacturing or high-hazard industrial facility.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead the site Environmental, Health, and Safety Management System in alignment with Coherent standards, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and applicable legal requirements.
• Develop and execute the site EHS strategy, objectives, performance indicators, and improvement initiatives.
• Participate in Sherman Site Leader staff meetings and provide updates on EHS performance, significant risks, incidents, compliance matters, corrective actions, and strategic priorities.
• Manage occupational safety and industrial hygiene programs, including hazard assessments, exposure assessments, inspections, incident investigations, ergonomics, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, PPE, machine guarding, electrical safety, hazardous energy control, confined space, fall protection, and powered industrial vehicle safety.
• Manage environmental programs and permit compliance, including hazardous waste, universal waste, stormwater, wastewater permit compliance, chemical management, air permit-by-rule requirements, spill prevention and response, regulatory reporting, inspections, and required records.
• Provide oversight of wastewater treatment activities, including permit requirements, sampling, operations, maintenance, records, contractor support, and corrective actions.
• Manage the site radiation safety and laser safety programs, including evaluations, surveys, training, inspections, required controls, records, and regulatory compliance.
• Own and manage the Toxic Gas Monitoring System, including system performance, alarm response, inspection and testing, maintenance coordination, equipment readiness, documentation, impairment management, and corrective actions.
• Lead EHS planning and execution for TGMS expansion projects, including design reviews, hazard assessments, contractor coordination, pre-job planning, permits, inspections, commissioning, and startup activities.
• Direct and manage the Emergency Response Team and emergency preparedness programs, including training, medical evaluations, HAZWOPER requirements, PPE, drills, emergency equipment, response procedures, external coordination, and emergency response or EHS coverage as needed.
• Lead the site OSHA Process Safety Management program and related high-hazard activities, including process safety information, process hazard analyses, operating procedures, training, contractor management, pre-startup safety reviews, mechanical integrity, hot work permits, management of change, incident investigations, emergency planning, compliance audits, and employee participation.
• Provide EHS leadership for construction, renovation, installation, and facilities projects and manage contractor safety requirements, including qualifications, onboarding, training, work permits, pre-job planning, inspections, incident reporting, and corrective actions.
• Lead incident reporting, investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, compliance assessments, program evaluations, and management reviews.
• Manage the site EHS Learning Management System, including the training matrix, assignments, completion tracking, overdue training follow-up, records, reporting, and coordination with department leaders.
• Develop and deliver EHS training and maintain accurate procedures, work instructions, permits, signs, maps, records, and communications.
• Prepare required compliance documentation and represent Coherent during regulatory inspections, audits, insurance reviews, and other external evaluations.
• Manage, coach, and develop the site EHS team by assigning responsibilities, establishing priorities, coordinating activities, evaluating performance, and supporting professional development.
• Support corporate EHS initiatives, standards, audits, and projects.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to support the needs of the business.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Five or more years of EHS management experience in a manufacturing, chemical, research, or other high-hazard industrial environment.
• Demonstrated experience managing EHS personnel and comprehensive EHS programs.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, Texas environmental requirements, and relevant industry standards.
• Experience with OSHA Process Safety Management in a covered manufacturing or high-hazard industrial facility.
• Experience with wastewater permit compliance and industrial wastewater operations.
• Experience with air permitting or air permit-by-rule compliance.
• Experience managing emergency response teams and hazardous materials emergency preparedness.
• Experience with contractor safety, construction safety, or EHS support for facility projects.
• Experience with radiation safety, laser safety, toxic gas monitoring systems, hazardous gases, chemical handling, or related high-hazard programs.
• Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations, hazard assessments, audits, inspections, and corrective action management.

• Ability to communicate effectively with employees, managers, senior leadership, contractors, regulatory agencies, and emergency responders.

  Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Environmental Professional, or other relevant professional certification.
• Master’s degree in a related discipline.
• Experience in advanced manufacturing, chemical processing, MOCVD, or other high-hazard operations.
• Experience with EPA Risk Management Program requirements.
• Experience managing Toxic Gas Monitoring System projects or other critical safety system expansions.
• Experience working with corporate EHS teams in a global manufacturing organization.

Working Conditions

• This position is 100% onsite at the Coherent Sherman, Texas facility.
• Regular presence in manufacturing, cleanroom, laboratory, utility, wastewater treatment, construction, chemical storage, and other industrial areas is required.
• Must be available to provide emergency response and/or EHS coverage outside normal business hours, including during emergencies, drills, regulatory inspections, critical operational events, construction activities, or TGMS expansion projects.
• The employee must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and enter areas where chemicals, noise, and other industrial hazards may be present.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
• Ability to frequently walk on concrete and uneven surfaces, climb stairs, and access manufacturing, cleanroom, laboratory, utility, wastewater, and construction areas.
• Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and work in confined or restricted areas as necessary.
• Ability to lift, carry, and handle equipment, samples, PPE, and other materials associated with EHS activities.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone or radio and recognize audible and visual alarms.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection when properly trained, medically cleared, and fit tested.
• Ability to respond to emergencies and perform required duties safely during drills, inspections, and other operational events.

• Maintain authorization to access controlled areas and comply with all applicable site security and access requirements.
• Remain available to provide emergency response and/or EHS coverage outside normal business hours when required.
