Job summary

Chemtrade's Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager at the Richmond facility leads the implementation and oversight of EHS policies under our Responsible Care framework. You will support incident investigations, audits, permit compliance, training, and continuous improvement across site operations.

The role requires 7+ years of safety management experience, a relevant bachelor’s degree, strong leadership and communication skills, and willingness to travel up to 50%.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or science, occupational health or safety.
  • Minimum 7 years of related safety management, environmental and/or supervisory responsibility.
  • Advanced knowledge of EHS regulations, management systems, regulatory agencies, trends and resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access).
  • Willingness to travel 30–50% up to a full week stay for support visits and training.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with site personnel to identify hazards and develop corrective/improvement measures, including review/approval of work permits and participation in incident investigations.
  • Coordinate and manage the implementation of EHS policies and programs at the facility, including maintenance of site management systems and compliance calendars.
  • Promote proactive safety participation and ensure reporting/investigation of injuries, illnesses, incidents and unsafe conditions.
  • Provide leadership to develop and maintain environmental, health and safety programs to meet regulations and customer requirements.
  • Support industrial hygiene programs through air and noise monitoring and reporting.
  • Participate in quality assurance and continual improvement under ISO 9000 and RC14001 processes.

EHS Manager

Position: EHS Manager

Primary Location: 525 Castro Street, Richmond, CA 94801 (In‑Person Role)

Reports To: Regional EHS Manager

Compensation: $160,000‑$190,000 USD base salary annually, plus a $15,000 USD annual housing allowance and comprehensive benefits package, and eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

About This Role and About You

The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager serves in a leadership role in the implementation, support, and oversight of Chemtrade Responsible Care EHS policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and practices at Chemtrade facilities located in their assigned locations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interface with site personnel to identify hazards and develop and implement corrective/improvement measures, including review and approval of specific work permits and participation in incident investigation teams, safety audits, design reviews, process safety reviews, project review teams, and job task analysis.
  • Coordinate and manage the implementation of Chemtrade Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) and Responsible Care policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and practices at assigned facility(s), including maintenance of site management systems, Incident Management Database, Action Item Database and EHS Compliance Calendar.
  • Promote proactive safety participation by all employees and ensure injuries, illnesses, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions are reported and investigated.
  • Provide leadership to develop, implement and maintain environmental, health and safety programs and policies to meet or exceed compliance with national, provincial, and local regulations, internal policies, and customer requirements.
  • Support the industrial hygiene program through air and noise monitoring and exposure assessments and prepare reports.
  • Participate in quality assurance and continual improvement under ISO 9000 and RC14001 processes.
  • Provide technical support, guidance and maintain all documentation essential to efficient operations of the EHS program; monitor interactions with regulatory authorities, insurance carriers or EHS consultants; ensure environmental permits and reporting are up to date.
  • Coaching, employee development, performance management, and training of assigned EHS department staff; conduct performance reviews.
  • Other duties as assigned to support EHS department goals and objectives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or science, occupational health or safety, industrial hygiene, or another relevant field (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum 7 years of related safety management, environmental and/or supervisory responsibility, preferably in chemical manufacturing or related environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of EHS regulations, management systems, regulatory agencies, trends and resources; excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) and extensive Internet search capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to build consensus and influence others.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Highly motivated and results‑oriented.
  • Exceptional organization and presentation skills; ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel (30‑50%) up to a full week stay for support visits, professional development seminars or other required travel.
Desirable Skills
  • Professional and/or industry certifications in environmental, safety, or industrial hygiene (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager).
  • Training or knowledge of hazardous material response (40 hr. Haz‑Mat Technician level) and confined space rescue.
  • Experience with implementation of Process Safety Management (PSM) programs; ability to conduct Process Hazard Analysis using HAZOP or equivalent method.
  • Knowledge of Responsible Care, Responsible Care Codes or other EHS Management Systems.
  • Familiarity with ANSI, API, NFPA and other recognized industry standards.
  • Knowledge of databases and ability to use databases for trending.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation requirements.
  • First Aid / CPR Certification.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities based on the needs of the company, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
