Job summary

Astec, a global infrastructure and manufacturing company, seeks an experienced Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) leader to develop and implement programs at its Chattanooga facilities. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a Sr. Safety role or leadership in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience implementing and sustaining behavior-based safety (BBS) programs preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and application of OSHA 1910 standards within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations, corrective actions, safety observations, and risk assessments.

About The Position

Develop, plan, and implement environmental, health, and safety programs for the Company. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations. Develop illness and injury prevention, building safety, and chemical safety policies and procedures. Oversee safety training and facility inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.

In addition to ensuring regulatory compliance, this role serves as a visible safety leader focused on strengthening safety culture, increasing employee engagement, promoting behavior-based safety initiatives, and building strong partnerships with leaders and employees across assigned operations.

Location: Chattanooga, TN (Onsite)

This position is based at Astec's Man Road facility and provides EHS leadership for assigned Chattanooga‑area operations. Regular travel between assigned Chattanooga facilities is required to support safety initiatives, employee engagement, and operational needs.

Key Deliverables
  • Inspects the facility to identify safety, health, and environmental risks.
  • Develops and implements inspection policies and procedures, and a schedule of routine inspections.
  • Develops health and safety procedures for all areas of the company.
  • Prepares and schedules training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics.
  • Monitors compliance with safety procedures.
  • Implements and supports behavior‑based safety (BBS) initiatives that encourage employee involvement and ownership of workplace safety.
  • Conducts safety observations and risk assessments to proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Coaches and influences leaders and employees to strengthen safety awareness, accountability, and engagement through regular presence on the plant floor, building strong working relationships with front‑line leadership and team members.
  • Maintains a visible presence throughout assigned operations to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Design and maintain company policies adhering to local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations. Keep abreast of any changes to environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations that impact the company, and implement company policies accordingly.
  • Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating company’s safety and environmental policy and procedure manuals.
  • Provide initial and refresher training for employees on company policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to employee safety, health, and protection from hazards.
  • Ensure necessary records are prepared and maintained according to established federal, state, and local safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Complete and file on a timely basis all federal, state, and local environmental reports and chemical inventory requests, and submit payment for all required fees on a timely basis.
  • Responsible for identifying chemical hazards and hazardous workplace conditions. Maintain a current inventory and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for all chemical hazards on the property. Take corrective action to eliminate, contain, or minimize the hazards, or coordinate the removal of physical, biological, and chemical hazards.
  • Involved in the design and development of facilities, work areas, and work procedures, and make environmental, health, and safety recommendations accordingly.
  • Serve as a contact with all federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulatory bodies, and property and workers’ compensation insurance representatives.
  • Ensure complete and thorough accident investigation, accurate recording of the details, and implementation of corrective action for all work‑related injuries and illnesses.
  • Conduct incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action reviews to prevent recurrence and improve workplace safety performance.
  • Conduct safety observations and risk assessments to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and hazard reduction.
  • Coach and support supervisors, managers, and employees in developing a proactive approach to workplace safety and hazard recognition.
  • Maintain employees’ safety and environmental training records. Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements.
  • Participate in all property and facility inspections conducted by federal, state, and local agencies, and insurance carriers.
  • Prepare and distribute various reports and forms including monthly department inspection reports, etc. Review inspection reports and take corrective action on identified safety or environmental hazards.
  • Oversee the Safety Committee and Safety Steering Committee.
  • Provide assistance or perform other duties as assigned.
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field required, Master’s degree desirable.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a Sr. Safety Tech, Specialist, or lead role or managerial in a manufacturing environment with knowledge and proficiency in EH&S programs preferred, or a combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Experience implementing and sustaining behavior‑based safety (BBS) programs preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and application of OSHA 1910 standards within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations, corrective actions, safety observations, and risk assessments.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and influence front‑line leaders and hourly employees.
  • Experience leading safety committees and employee‑driven safety initiatives preferred.
  • Ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of medical information.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be resourceful, well‑organized, meticulous, and accurate.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment including telephone, computer, calculator, photocopier, and fax machine.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office products required.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of injury in an office environment and occasionally a manufacturing shop plant environment. Duties include a typical office setting including extensive computer work, sitting or standing. This position requires regular visibility within manufacturing operations and routine travel between assigned Chattanooga‑area facilities to support employees, conduct safety observations, participate in investigations, and promote a consistent safety culture.
