Job summary

Castelion is seeking an Environmental, Health and Safety Engineer to provide hands-on EHS support for our Torrance manufacturing, R&D, and development test operations.

This field-oriented role bridges EHS and engineering, requiring collaboration with engineering and operations to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and implement practical controls. Onsite in Torrance, with growth within a fast-paced defense-focused environment.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience in EHS engineering or related field in manufacturing, aerospace, or defense environments.
• Experience conducting hazard assessments and risk analyses for equipment, processes, or test operations.
• Working knowledge of OSHA/Cal-OSHA requirements and common industrial safety programs.
• Ability to translate hazards into practical controls and support safety programs (machine safety, LOTO, respiratory protection).
• Experience supporting incident investigations and corrective action development.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on and technical EHS support for manufacturing, R&D, development test, maintenance, and facilities operations.

• Lead risk assessments (JHAs, PHAs, FMEAs, What-If analyses) for new or modified operations.

• Evaluate hazards related to machine guarding, hazardous energy, electrical, ventilation, chemical safety, and handling.
• Lead investigations of incidents and near misses and develop corrective actions.
• Support core EHS programs (LOTO, machine safety, electrical safety, respiratory protection, Hazard Communication, PPE, fall protection).
• Conduct field assessments and walkdowns to verify controls and drive corrective actions to closure.
• Interpret OSHA/Cal-OSHA, fire code, NFPA requirements and translate into procedures and controls.

About This Role

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer provides hands‑on and technical EHS support for Castelion’s Torrance manufacturing, R&D, and development test operations.

This role partners closely with engineering, manufacturing, test, facilities, and EHS team members to identify hazards, evaluate technical risk, and develop practical controls that enable safe and efficient operations.

The EHS Engineer will have a particular focus on the technical evaluation of new and evolving equipment, processes, and test activities across manufacturing, composites and materials processing, machining, avionics, and development testing .

This is a field-oriented role that bridges EHS and engineering. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between the manufacturing floor and technical discussions—whether evaluating a new piece of equipment, reviewing a test setup, developing a risk assessment , participating in a design or readiness review, investigating an incident, or working with engineers to establish controls for a new process.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands‑on and technical EHS support for manufacturing, R&D, development test, maintenance, and facility operations, with a strong presence where work is performed.
• Identify and evaluate workplace, equipment, process, and test hazards and partner with engineering and operations teams to develop practical engineering, administrative, and procedural controls.
• Lead and support technical risk assessments, including JHAs, PHAs, FMEAs, What-If analyses, equipment/process reviews, and readiness assessments for new, modified, and higher-risk operations.
• Support the introduction, modification, and commissioning of equipment, processes, and test systems by evaluating EHS requirements and ensuring appropriate safeguards and controls are incorporated before operation.
• Provide technical safety support across manufacturing, composites and materials processing, machining, avionics, and development testing, including pressure, thermal, vibration, electrical, mechanical, and other hardware test activities.
• Evaluate technical safety concerns involving machine guarding, hazardous energy, pressure systems, electrical hazards, ventilation, chemical use, material handling, and other equipment or process hazards.
• Support industrial hygiene activities, including identification of potential exposures, exposure assessments and sampling strategies, evaluation of results, and implementation of engineering and work‑practice controls.
• Lead and support investigations of incidents and high‑potential near misses, identify technical and systemic causes, and develop and verify effective corrective actions.
• Provide technical support for core EHS programs, including but not limited to LOTO, machine safety, electrical safety, respiratory protection, Hazard Communication, PPE, hot work, fall protection, material handling, and emergency preparedness.
• Conduct field assessments and operational walkdowns to verify controls are effective, identify emerging risks, and work with operations to drive corrective actions to closure.
• Interpret applicable OSHA/Cal‑OSHA, fire code, NFPA, and other EHS requirements and translate them into practical requirements, technical guidance, JHAs, procedures, and controls for site operations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, or a related technical field.
• 4 + years of experience in EHS engineering, safety engineering, manufacturing safety, process safety, or a related technical role within manufacturing, aerospace, defense, R&D, or another industrial environment.
• Experience conducting technical hazard assessments and risk assessments for equipment, manufacturing processes, or test operations.
• Working knowledge of OSHA/Cal‑OSHA requirements and common industrial safety programs.
• Ability to understand manufacturing equipment, engineering drawings, process documentation, test setups, and other technical information and translate identified hazards into practical controls.
• Hands‑on experience supporting occupational safety programs such as machine safety, LOTO, electrical safety, Hazard Communication, PPE, and respiratory protection.
• Experience supporting incident investigations and corrective action development.
• Strong technical problem‑solving, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, test, facilities, and EHS teams.
• Ability to work full‑time onsite in Torrance, California and support operations outside normal business hours when required.
• Ability to meet U.S. export control requirements (ITAR or EAR).

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience in aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing, composites, R&D, or similarly complex technical environments.
• Experience supporting development testing, including pressure, thermal, vibration, mechanical, electrical, or hardware qualification testing.
• Experience with structured hazard assessment methodologies such as PHA, What-If, FMEA, HAZOP, or similar techniques.
• Experience with equipment safety reviews, commissioning, Management of Change, or safety‑in‑design processes.
• Working knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, exposure assessment, ventilation, chemical safety, noise, and non‑ionizing radiation.
• Experience evaluating machine guarding, hazardous energy, pressure systems, electrical hazards, and other engineering safety controls.
• Familiarity with EHS management systems or structured program frameworks such as ISO 45001 or ISO 14001.
• OSHA 30, ASP, CSP, CIH, or similar training or professional certification.
• Experience working in a startup or rapidly scaling manufacturing environment.
