Job summary

Castelion Corporation in Midland, Texas is seeking an experienced EHS Engineer to support field manufacturing, testing operations, and compliance with OSHA, ATF, and environmental requirements. You'll lead hazard assessments, incident investigations, JHAs/PHAs, and implement practical controls, partnering with engineering, operations, and facilities.

EHS Engineer

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer provides hands-on and technical EHS support for Castelion's Midland manufacturing and test operations, including energetic material processing, mix and cast operations, equipment and process safety, and test activities.

This is a highly field-oriented role responsible for both the day-to-day execution of EHS programs and the technical evaluation of operational risk. The EHS Engineer will spend significant time where the work is performed, partnering directly with manufacturing, test, engineering, and facilities teams to identify hazards, develop practical controls, and ensure EHS requirements are effectively implemented.

The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between the field and technical discussions, whether conducting an inspection, supporting a test operation, investigating an incident, developing a JHA, or working with engineers to evaluate hazards associated with a new and evolving processes, equipment, etc.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily, hands-on EHS support for manufacturing, mix and cast, test, maintenance, and facility operations, maintaining a strong presence in operational areas.
  • Identify and evaluate workplace and process hazards and partner with engineering and operations teams to develop practical engineering, administrative, and procedural controls.
  • Lead and support risk assessments, including JHAs, PHAs, equipment/process reviews, and readiness assessments for new, modified, and higher-risk operations.
  • Support new equipment, process changes, commissioning, and first-time operations by evaluating EHS risks and ensuring appropriate controls are established before work begins.
  • Execute and maintain core EHS programs including LOTO, machine safety, PPE, respiratory protection, Hazard Communication, electrical safety, hot work, fall protection, material handling, and emergency preparedness.
  • Conduct routine field inspections and operational walkdowns to verify controls are effective, identify emerging risks, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Support energetic manufacturing and test activities by evaluating operational hazards and implementing requirements established through EHS and Energetics Safety reviews.
  • Lead and support incident and near-miss investigations, identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and verify their effectiveness.
  • Support industrial hygiene activities, including exposure assessments, sampling, evaluation of results, and implementation of exposure controls.
  • Manage day-to-day environmental compliance activities including hazardous waste, chemical inventories, spill prevention, inspections, and required records.
  • Support site compliance with applicable ATF explosives requirements, including routine inspections, explosives storage and inventory controls, required records, operational compliance, and corrective actions in coordination with EHS and Energetics Safety leadership.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training and provide direct field coaching to employees, technicians, engineers, and supervisors.
  • Develop and improve site procedures, JHAs, work instructions, and other EHS documentation based on operational needs and lessons learned.
  • Serve as an accessible onsite EHS resource who can independently resolve routine issues, recognize when additional technical expertise is required, and escape significant risks appropriately.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of EHS, safety engineering, manufacturing safety, process safety, or related experience in manufacturing, aerospace, defense, chemical processing, or other industrial environment.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and common industrial EHS programs.
  • Experience conducting hazard assessments, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action management.
  • Ability to understand manufacturing processes, equipment, and technical documentation and translate identified hazards into practical controls.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working in field. and in outdoor test environments.
  • Ability to work full-time onsite in Midland, Texas and support operations outside normal business hours when required
  • Ability to meet U.S. export control requirements (ITAR or EAR)
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, energetic materials, chemical processing, propulsion, or other high-hazard manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting mix/cast, energetic material processing, propulsion manufacturing, or test operations.
  • Experience with structured hazard assessment methods such as PHA, What-If, FMEA, or similar techniques.
  • Familiarity with process safety, Management of Change, or equipment commissioning.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene, hazardous waste, and environmental compliance.
  • Familiarity with ATF, NFPA, or DoD explosives safety requirements.
  • OSHA 30, HAZWOPER, ASP, CSP, or similar training or certification.
  • Experience working in a startup or rapidly scaling manufacturing environment.
