Job summary

Camp Burgess & Hayward’s Outdoor Education & Retreat Center, a YMCA facility on Cape Cod in Sandwich, MA, seeks an Outdoor Educator to lead environmental education classes and teambuilding, while facilitating ropes courses and waterfront activities this fall.

You will join a supportive team, with duties spanning class delivery, safety oversight of ropes and water activities, and guest service. Housing and meals are provided, with seasonal hours and program support.

Qualifications

• Passion for working outdoors with youth, teens, and adults.
• Desire to facilitate environmental, teambuilding, and challenge course programs.
• 21+ years old, with a college degree or relevant life experience.
• Ability to live and work as a positive team-player in a collaborative residential setting.
• Physical ability to spend long, active hours outdoors in all elements, safely facilitating others.
• Lifeguard certification strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead environmental education classes and teambuilding programming with confidence, accuracy, and enthusiasm.
• Facilitate the safe use of our low ropes challenge course and rock wall.
• Help facilitate the safe use of our high ropes course and zipline.
• Facilitate the safe use of our waterfront.
• Speak clearly and audibly in front of large audiences.
• Provide friendly and helpful customer service to all of our guests.
• Support house-keeping, grounds-keeping, and dining operations.

Salary Range: $110.00 - $116.00 Commission

About Camp

Come join our fun and supportive community at Camp Burgess & Hayward’s Outdoor Education & Retreat Center, a YMCA facility located a short drive from the ocean on beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Our forested property is situated on over 300 acres which include three freshwater ponds, a state-of-the-art high ropes course, a low ropes teambuilding course, climbing tower, educational farm, waterfront, hiking trails, and dining and overnight facilities. During our fall season, we host students from many local schools, and a range of specialty camp programs during the weekends.

Fall Outdoor Education Job Duties

• Lead environmental education classes and teambuilding programming with confidence, accuracy, and enthusiasm
• Facilitate the safe use of our low ropes challenge course and rock wall
• Help facilitate the safe use of our high ropes course and zipline
• Facilitate the safe use of our waterfront
• Speak clearly and audibly in front of large audiences
• Provide friendly and helpful customer service to all of our guests
• Support house-keeping, grounds-keeping, and dining operations

Our staff training will cover class curriculum, group facilitation strategies, and technical challenge course skills required for the job. You will have the dedicated support and guidance of our experienced staff as you develop your leadership style and gain confidence facilitating others in outdoor activities.

Hours

Expect to work varying hours, with some long days, as daily hours are tailored to the needs of our guests. You will typically have two days off for every five days worked.

Season Dates

Fall season dates: August 16th- late October/ Early November

Compensation

We offer competitive pay starting at $110 per day, with an increase to $116 per day for those who have a lifeguard certification.
