Job description

Position Overview

This posting is for Educational Assistant positions at the specified location. The authorized level of these positions is Educational Assistant III, with applications accepted for Educational Assistant I in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range

• Educational Assistant I, SR-10: $3,019.78 per month
• Educational Assistant II, SR-12: $3,260.76 per month
• Educational Assistant III, SR-14: $3,526.98 per month

Examples of Duties

• Independently performs various academic, instruction‑related support activities, tutors students, observes and reports on progress and difficulties.
• Provides social, vocational, and daily living instruction to students with disabilities to enable independent functioning; observes, reports, and suggests modifications.
• Provides counseling support activities, develops rapport, encourages expression, observes and reports, carries out pre‑approved activities for healthy self‑concept and early identification of needs.
• Provides articulation reinforcement lessons and repetitive drills to correct/improve speech sounds under guidance of a speech pathologist; may receive related training.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent and one of the following:

• Successful completion of an examination approved by the Hawaii State Department of Education, such as the ParaPro or ParaPathways Assessment.
• At least 48 baccalaureate‑level semester credits from an accredited institution recognized by the Department, including 3 credits in mathematics and 3 in English.
• An associate degree or higher from an accredited institution recognized by the Department.

Experience Requirements

General and specialized experience years:

• Educational Assistant I: 0 years general, 0 specialized.
• Educational Assistant II: 1 year general, 0 specialized.
• Educational Assistant III: 1 year general, 1 year specialized.

Experience includes paid or volunteer interaction with students, evaluation, and reporting. A school year is approximately 180 instructional days. Substitutions are allowed per the detailed list.

Driver’s License Requirement

Some positions require a current, valid driver’s license.

Lift and Carry Requirement

Some positions require the ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds, and/or up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Substitutions Allowed

• Child Development Associate credential or related program may substitute for half a year of specialized experience.
• 15 baccalaureate‑level semester credits may substitute for half a year of general experience up to 1 year.
• 15 baccalaureate‑level semester credits in Education or related field may substitute for half a year of specialized experience up to 2 years.
• Associate degree may substitute for 1 year of general experience.
• Associate degree in Education may substitute for all general and specialized experience.
• Bachelor degree or higher may substitute for all general and specialized experience.
• High school graduates may substitute up to 2 years of specialized experience for certain coursework.

Quality of Experience

Number of years alone is not sufficient; overall experience must demonstrate appropriate scope and responsibility for the duties.

Supplemental Information

Salary is based on full‑time employment and includes shortage and school‑year differentials. Eligibility for experience may not be concurrent.
