Job description

Overview

This posting is being used to fill various Educational Assistant positions at the specified location. The authorized level of these positions is Educational Assistant III. Applications are being accepted down to Educational Assistant I in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Compensation

• Educational Assistant I, SR-10: $3,019.78 per month
• Educational Assistant II, SR-12: $3,260.76 per month
• Educational Assistant III, SR-14: $3,526.98 per month

Responsibilities

• Independently performs various academic instruction‑related support activities, tutors students as directed by the teacher, and observes and reports on student progress and difficulties.
• Independently provides social, vocational, and daily living instruction to students with disabilities to enable them to function as independently as possible. Observes and reports on progress, suggests modifications.
• Independently performs assigned counseling support activities. Develops rapport, encourages expression of problems, observes and reports progress, carries out pre‑approved activities that promote a healthy self‑concept, develop social skills, and help provide early identification of special needs.
• Independently provides articulation reinforcement lessons and repetitive drills to correct or improve speech sounds as instructed by the speech pathologist. May receive training related to common speech/language disorders.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent and one of the following:

• Successful completion of an examination approved by the Hawaii State Department of Education (e.g., ParaPro or ParaPathways Assessment via ETS).
• At least 48 baccalaureate‑level semester credits from an accredited institution, including 3 credits in mathematics and 3 credits in English.
• An associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.

Experience Requirements

Experience required varies by level:

• Educational Assistant I – 0 years general experience, 0 years specialized experience.
• Educational Assistant II – 1 year general experience, 0 years specialized experience.
• Educational Assistant III – 1 year general experience, 1 year specialized experience.

General experience: paid or volunteer experience involving direct interaction with people, demonstrating ability to provide and elicit information, observe, evaluate, and report accurately.

Specialized experience: direct academic, personal, social, vocational, or behavioral services to children or students in an educational setting.

Driver's License Requirement

Some positions require possession of a current, valid driver's license.

Lift and Carry Requirements

Some positions require the ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds and/or up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Substitutions Allowed

• CDA credential or related program may substitute for one‑half year of specialized experience.
• 15 baccalaureate‑level semester credits may substitute for one‑half year general experience up to one year.
• 15 baccalaureate‑level semester credits in education or related field may substitute for one‑half year specialized experience up to two years.
• Associate degree may substitute for one year general experience.
• Associate degree in education may substitute for all general and specialized experience.
• Bachelor degree or higher may substitute for all general and specialized experience.
