Job summary

The Human Rights Foundation in New York seeks an Editorial Manager to oversee editorial quality across HRF’s public-facing content—from research reports to web copy and newsletters.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years in editorial roles, preferably nonprofit, journalism, or digital publishing.
  • Exceptional editing and proofreading with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to tailor content to diverse audiences and platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of grammar, usage, tone, and AP Style.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; ability to manage multiple projects.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread external-facing content for clarity, accuracy, tone, style, grammar, and consistency.
  • Oversee editorial review of research reports, policy briefs, event programs, fundraising materials, and other print publications.
  • Lead drafting for key institutional publications, including the Annual Report and Oslo Freedom Forum Recap Report.
  • Edit and refine digital content, including web pages, blog posts, email newsletters, and social media copy.
  • Collaborate with content creators across departments to maintain a cohesive editorial voice and messaging strategy.
  • Develop and enforce HRF’s editorial style guide to ensure consistency across platforms and formats.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to staff and contributors to strengthen their writing and messaging.
  • Ensure all materials are accessible, engaging, and aligned with HRF’s mission and goals.
  • Manage editorial workflows, timelines, and approvals to meet deadlines and support campaigns.
  • Contribute to protocols for fact checking and source verification with legal, policy, and advocacy teams.
  • Identify and manage external editorial providers as needed (freelance editors, copywriters, translators, fact checkers).
  • Collaborate with the digital team to ensure copy meets SEO goals and guidelines.

Job Overview

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is seeking a meticulous, detail-oriented, and mission-driven Editorial Manager to oversee the editorial quality and consistency of all HRF’s public-facing content. This role will serve as the organization’s editorial standard bearer, responsible for editing a wide range of materials—from in-depth research reports and printed publications to digital content including web copy, email newsletters, and social media. The Editorial Manager will ensure that all content adheres to the highest standards of clarity and accuracy, and supports strategic communications goals. The ideal candidate is an exceptional editor and communicator able to tailor content to diverse audiences and platforms while maintaining consistent voice and brand standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Edit and proofread all external-facing content for clarity, accuracy, tone, style, grammar, and consistency.
  • Oversee editorial review of research reports, policy briefs, event programs, fundraising materials, and other print publications.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail and consistency.
  • Demonstrated experience editing a wide range of content types and adapting tone and style to fit various platforms.
  • Strong understanding of grammar, usage, tone, syntax, and AP Style.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, compelling narratives.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with human rights, international affairs, or related topics is highly desirable.
  • Collaborative mindset with strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Passion for human rights and a commitment to HRF’s mission.
Compensation

The salary range for this position is $70,000 – $80,000 per year, commensurate with experience. We offer a generous benefits package that includes fully covered medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; a flexible PTO plan and comprehensive company-paid holiday schedule; and many other voluntary benefits.
