Educational Assistant – Spec Ed Preschool

Purpose Statement

The job of Educational Assistant – Spec Ed Preschool is done for the purpose/s of providing assistance to preschool students that receive academic and social emotional services in a self‑contained preschool; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance, including toileting, diapering and miscellaneous medical procedures after specialized training involving tube feeding, gastrostomy tubes, colostomy bags, trachs and oxygen for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Assists children, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, motor perception programs, colors, numbers) to present and reinforce learning concepts and help reach academic goals.
  • Confers with teachers, health professionals and other community agency personnel as directed to evaluate preschool students’ progress and implement behavioral objectives.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behavior to create a comfortable, supportive environment and reinforce student objectives.
  • Maintains classroom equipment, work area, and student files/records (adapting instructional materials, daily tracking of student progress) to ensure a safe learning environment and reliable information.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of preschool children in various settings—classroom, playground, lunch, rest periods, restrooms—to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Organizes indoor/outdoor, quiet/active play activities appropriate to age group for the purpose of actively participating in learning activities with children.
  • Performs non‑violent crisis intervention techniques and restraints to de‑escalate crisis situations and ensure safety and security for all.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (copying, taking attendance, medical forms) to support the teacher and provide necessary records/materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Promotes good social habits to improve the quality of student outcomes and encourage development.
  • Responds to emergency situations for immediate safety resolution.
  • Serves breakfast, lunch and/or snacks to meet children’s nutritional needs.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • SKILLS required to perform multiple technical tasks and upgrade skills as job conditions change, including operating standard office and instructional equipment, using software applications, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • KNOWLEDGE to perform basic math; understand written procedures; write routine documents; speak clearly; analyze situations to define issues. Specific knowledge includes concepts of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development and learning styles, age‑appropriate activities, and safety practices and procedures.
  • ABILITIES include scheduling activities, gathering and collating data, considering factors when using equipment, working flexibly with others, handling significant diversity of individuals and groups, problem‑solving, communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, working as part of a team, and tolerating constant interruptions.
Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job requires approximately 50% sitting, 30% walking, and 20% standing. Conditions may involve exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Testing, Certificates, and Licenses
  • 60 college semester hours OR passing score on the Para Professional Test.
  • Clearances: Measles/Rubella Immunity/Vaccination, Tuberculosis Clearance, IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Valid form I‑9.
Salary Grade

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt. Salary Grade: 18.
