Job summary

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Product Development Engineering Co‑Op to join the ECP Product Development Team in Danvers, MA. You will perform bench testing, help develop test methods, and contribute to mechanical design and prototyping efforts.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering degree, with hands-on lab experience and familiarity with SOLIDWORKS and Excel. This paid internship offers exposure to cross‑functional partners and practical engineering problem

Qualifications

  • Pursuing Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Biomedical/Mechanical Eng.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands‑on lab work.
  • Foundational knowledge of mechanical design, engineering mechanics, experimental methods, and data analysis.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software; SOLIDWORKS preferred.
  • Ability to organize and analyze data using Excel; statistics software a plus.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; ability to manage multiple assignments.
  • Prior prototyping, machining, 3D printing, lab testing, or medical device projects preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute hands-on bench testing of medical device components and systems.
  • Develop and improve test methods, define procedures, select equipment, and design fixtures.
  • Create and iterate mechanical designs for components and test fixtures using 3D CAD; support prototyping.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret test data; summarize results and present conclusions.
  • Support root cause investigations and design improvements through structured experiments.

Requirements
  • Planning and executing hands-on bench testing, including feasibility, characterization, simulated-use, and design verification testing of medical device components and systems.
  • Developing and improving test methods by defining procedures, selecting equipment, designing fixtures, troubleshooting setups, and assessing measurement repeatability and robustness.
  • Creating and iterating mechanical designs for product components, prototypes, and test fixtures using 3D CAD; support prototype fabrication through 3D printing, machining, or other rapid-prototyping methods.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting test data; summarize results, identify trends or failure modes, and present conclusions and recommendations to the engineering team.
  • Supporting root cause investigations and design improvements through structured experimentation, inspection, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Documenting test procedures, experimental results, design work, and engineering conclusions in clear technical reports and presentations while collaborating with Product Development, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and other partners.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and enthusiasm for hands‑on laboratory work, building test setups, and troubleshooting hardware.
  • Foundational knowledge of mechanical design, engineering mechanics, experimental methods, and data analysis, with the ability to apply classroom concepts to practical engineering problems.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software; SOLIDWORKS is preferred.
  • Ability to organize and analyze data using tools such as Microsoft Excel; experience with statistical analysis software is a plus.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple assignments while working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Prior experience with prototyping, machining, 3D printing, laboratory testing, test method development, or medical device projects is preferred but not required.

Additional Description for Pay Transparency

The anticipated base pay range for this position is : $23.50/hr to $52.50/hr

The expected pay range for this position is between $23.50 per hour and $52.50 per hour but will be based on candidate's program year, discipline, degree and/or experience.

  • Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan.
  • Co-Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year.
  • For employees who reside in the State of Washington, up to 56 hours per calendar year.
  • Co-Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension).
