Organizational context: The Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) mobilizes international support and advocates for these groups to address their sustainable development challenges. Subprogramme 1 focuses on coordinating international support and resources for the implementation of the Programme of Action for LDCs, enhancing monitoring, and raising awareness of their special needs. This role reports to the Senior Economic Affairs Officer.
Job purpose: The Economic Affairs Officer will monitor and analyze economic and social developments in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), identifying emerging issues related to the Doha Programme of Action. This involves designing and conducting studies, interpreting econometric modeling, and developing policy recommendations and proposals for development strategies. The role supports intergovernmental bodies by providing substantive input on economic issues and representing the sub-programme at international meetings. Additionally, the officer will prepare speeches, support junior staff, participate in departmental initiatives, and utilize data visualization for reporting and decision-making. Coordination of budget funding activities is also a key responsibility.
Responsibilities: Key responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing economic and social developments in LDCs, identifying issues related to the Doha Programme of Action, and conducting studies on economic development, particularly concerning education in STEM fields. The role involves interpreting econometric modeling, developing policy recommendations, and formulating proposals for development strategies. The officer will provide substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, represent the sub-programme at meetings, and organize expert group meetings. Additional duties include preparing speeches, supporting junior staff, participating in broader departmental initiatives, collecting and analyzing data for insights and reporting using visualization methods, and coordinating budget funding activities.
Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in economics, international relations, finance, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying work experience may substitute for the advanced degree.
Work experience: A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, or applying economic principles in development programs is required. Experience in quantitative research on economic development, analyzing LDC sustainable development challenges, and providing policy advice are desirable. Experience in program budget preparation is also desirable.
