Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse II ECMO Specialist to join the ECMO Team. You will work under the ECMO Nurse Manager, managing ECMO pumps and delivering goal-directed nursing care to ECMO patients and families.

The role requires a strong critical care background, licensure as a registered nurse or equivalent, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary ICU team to optimize patient outcomes. Shifts rotate to cover 24/7 ECMO care.

Job Description

The ECMO Specialist is defined by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization as “the technical specialist trained to manage the ECMO system (blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenator, and related equipment); as well as pertinent maintenance and emergency procedures and the clinical needs of the patient on ECMO (such as maintenance of normal acid-base balance, oxygenation and ventilation, anticoagulation) under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician. The ECMO Specialist should have a strong critical care background as a nurse or respiratory therapist in neonatal, pediatric, cardiac, or adult populations. Additionally, they have attained licensure as a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, certified perfusionist, or physician. The Medical University of South Carolina has chosen to support an ECMO Specialist Team comprised of registered nurses and respiratory therapists from within the intensive care units. The ECMO Specialist is additionally responsible for collaborating with bedside RN, physicians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care for these very complex patients in the ICU. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
