Job summary

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, VA seeks an experienced sonographer to acquire echocardiographic exams and support the adult echocardiography laboratory operations. The role includes preparing patients, documenting clinical histories, and ensuring ALARA-compliant imaging while maintaining patient safety.

Requires ARDMS/CCI/ARRT credentials or AE, additional certifications (RDMS, RCS) and BLS. Minimum 2 years of related experience; Monday–Friday schedule with 40 hours/month commitment;

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years related work experience.
• Graduate from Specialty Training Program-Related Field of Study (Required); Bachelor’s Degree-Related Field of Study (Preferred).
• Adult Echocardiography - ARDMS or CCI/ARRT credentials; Basic Life Support; RDMS/RSCS/AE certifications are desirable.

Responsibilities

• Ensure correct order, patient identification, exam prep and accurate documentation while maintaining confidentiality.
• Use appropriate imaging protocols, optimize factors, and apply ALARA principles to maximize patient safety and care.
• Prepare and/or administer medications through vascular access sites as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
• Evaluate images for positioning and quality; verify data archiving and post-processing as applicable.
• Educate and monitor students and other health care providers; assist with interventional procedures when needed.
• Communicate abnormal findings to prioritize further testing or urgent care with licensed provider.
• Collaborate with a licensed practitioner during sonographic interventional procedures.
• Maintain optimal equipment parameters for diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Job Summary:

Responsible for a variety of technical duties necessary to the acquisition of echocardiographic examinations and maintenance of the normal operation of the adult echocardiography laboratory.

Cardiac sonographers independently perform or assist the licensed practitioner in the completion of various cardiac imaging procedures. Sonographers prepare, administer and document activities related to ultrasound enhancing agents in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations, or lawful institutional policy.

Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range in their assigned department.

Job Duties:

• Ensures correct order is obtained, patient is properly identified and prepared for exam, and that clinical history is corroborated and appropriately documented while respecting confidentiality.
• Utilizes appropriate imaging protocol and optimizes technical factors while maximizing patient safety, optimizing patient care, and applying principles of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable).
• Preparing and/or administering, as applicable, medications through new or existing vascular access site as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
• Evaluates images for proper positioning and acceptable technical quality and verifies archival storage and/or transfer of data, post processing of data if applicable.
• Educating and monitoring students and other health care providers.
• Ensures correct order is obtained, patient is properly identified and prepared for exam, and that clinical history is corroborated and appropriately documented while respecting confidentiality.
• Preparing and/or administering ultrasound enhancing agents through new or existing vascular access site in accordance with ASE guidelines for appropriate use.

• Collaborating with a licensed practitioner in the performance of sonographic interventional procedures.
• Ensuring equipment parameters for diagnostic, interventional procedures are of optimal technical and administrative quality as requested by a licensed practitioner.
• Performing diagnostic, interventional imaging sonographic procedures as prescribed by a licensed practitioner or during appropriate educational activities.
• Demonstrates commitment to department and organizational priorities.
• Fully proficient in all assigned routine and complex job duties.
• Participates in modality quality or process improvement activities.
• Assists in approved research activities.
• Assist with structural heart procedures.

Position Details:

The following certifications required upon hire:

• Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) as a sonographer or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) certification and
• Adult Echocardiography: ARDMS (AE) or CCI credential.

Schedule & Hours:

• Primarily Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Occasional early start times and some travel may be required (details discussed during the interview process)
• Minimum commitment: 40 hours per month

Weekend / On‑Call:

• Weekends and on‑call are not required
• Eligible to participate in weekend shifts and/or on‑call rotations if desired
