Job Description

The Exceptional Children Teacher works within this mission to provide high‑quality instruction and support for students with exceptionalities.

Qualifications
  • Belief in the mission and vision of East Wake Academy and commitment to supporting them
  • North Carolina Exceptional Children certification
  • Ability to teach beyond a basal curriculum and integrate the Common Core and Core Knowledge Curriculum
  • Strong collaborative skills and data‑driven instruction approach
  • Excellent organizational, critical‑thinking, perseverance, and flexibility skills
  • A passion for the education profession and for student achievement
  • Evidence of effective teaching experience, especially with students with exceptionalities
Responsibilities
  • Teach students along the special education continuum using co‑taught, small‑group, and one‑on‑one structures, including push‑in or pull‑out approaches as needed
  • Plan and manage intensive support for students requiring additional services
  • Case‑manage students with learning disabilities, including facilitating teacher and parent meetings, managing IEPs and related documentation, and advocating for students
  • Provide consultations for students identified but not receiving direct services and for those who are twice exceptional
  • Assess student needs and conduct progress monitoring
  • Support teachers with differentiation strategies in the classroom
  • Promote the inclusive values and mission of the school through a multidisciplinary team approach
  • Advocate the use of assistive/adaptive technologies
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of curriculum developments and trends in exceptional children education
  • Commit to professional growth by participating in professional learning communities and development opportunities
  • Engage parents in educational advocacy and provide or lead professional development programming as needed
Physical Requirements

Office Position – Sedentary (see attached position sheet)

  • Balancing on uneven surfaces, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting (up to 50 lbs, average 20 lbs)
  • Fingering, grasping, and feeling; regular talking and hearing; repetitive wrist/hand/finger movements
  • Visual acuity required for reading, computer use, and detailed observation tasks
  • Work may require narrow aisle navigation and occasional standing or walking
Physical Exertion
  • Sedentary work involving light force up to 10–20 lbs
  • Light work if physical exertion exceeds sedentary criteria while seated most of the time
