Job Description

General Statement

Under general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Works to develop and implement the Individual Education Program (IEP) in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s age and developmental level. Develops lesson plans, adapts materials, and designs activities to help EC students achieve appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and meet their IEP goals. Monitors student progress and maintains EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines. Reports to principal.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develops and implements an instructional plan compatible with curricular goals and IEPs.
  • Creates and updates IEPs using diagnostic information from assessments.
  • Provides direct special education instruction.
  • Employs diverse teaching methods, adapting or creating materials as needed.
  • Monitors and manages student behavior, maintains classroom discipline, deescalates inappropriate behaviors, employs appropriate strategies, restrains when necessary, and records restraints.
  • Assists students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks.
  • Communicates progress to parents via written reports.
  • Acts as case coordinator, consulting with caregivers, support staff, and parents.
  • Maintains student records in line with North Carolina regulations and federal statutes.
  • Treats all students fairly and interacts effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and community members.
  • Engages in professional development and demonstrates growth.

Additional Job Functions

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in special education and certification in at least one area of disability as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required

Physical Requirements

Use a variety of classroom equipment, undertake negligible force tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling. Consistent with Light Work.
