Job summary

WSP is seeking an Early Career Electrical Engineer to join the Small Utility Services Team in Tyler, TX. You will assist with design, analysis, and project execution on substations, transmission, and distribution projects.

You will work with experienced engineers and utility clients, developing technical calculations, reports, and drawings while learning WSP and client standards. This entry-level role emphasizes growth within a global energy-focused firm.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (BSEE) or Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) from ABET-accredited university.
  • 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and power system concepts.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with clients and team members.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with detailed design of low- to extra-high-voltage substations and P&C design.
  • Support system protection and relaying activities including substation and transmission relaying.
  • Assist with the design of overhead and underground distribution up to 25kV.
  • Support transmission line projects up to 230kV.
  • Participate in QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and clients to support project execution.
  • Develop calculations, reports, drawings, and documentation per codes and standards.

Job Description

This position provides an opportunity to support a variety of electric utility projects involving substations, transmission, and distribution systems. The selected candidate will assist with engineering design, analysis, and project execution while working alongside experienced engineers and utility clients.


Your Impact


  • Assist with the detailed design of low- to extra-high-voltage substations, including:

    • Physical substation design

    • Protection & Control (P&C) design



  • Support system protection and relaying activities, including:

    • Substation relaying

    • Transmission line relaying

    • Distribution coordination studies



  • Assist with the design of overhead and underground electric distribution systems up to 25kV.

  • Support the design of transmission line projects up to 230kV.

  • Participate in QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables.

  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, project managers, and utility clients to support successful project execution.

  • Develop technical calculations, reports, drawings, and documentation in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.

  • Learn and apply WSP and client engineering standards, processes, and quality procedures.

  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while managing priorities and meeting project schedules.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (BSEE) or Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) from an ABET-accredited university, preferably with a power systems emphasis.

  • 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience.

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and power system concepts.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.


Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and technical documentation.


Additional Requirements


  • Legally authorized to work permanently in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Internship or co-op experience with electric utilities, consulting engineering firms, or industrial facilities.

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Familiarity with utility transmission, distribution, or substation systems.

  • Exposure to electrical design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, CAPE, ASPEN, ETAP, or similar engineering tools.

  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, including IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility design practices.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $60,600 - $100,00


WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
