University of the District of Columbia Law invites applications for a full-time Visiting Legal Writing Instructor for the 2026-27 academic year. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Director of Legal Writing and three other instructors to enhance the legal writing curriculum.

The role involves teaching two sections of the Lawyering Process or one section of that course and one upper-level appellate advocacy course, applying flipped classrooms and digital tools, and mentoring

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree and bar admission in DC or another jurisdiction.
  • Excellent legal writing and analytical skills.
  • Experience in law practice or a judicial clerkship.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of scholarship.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach two sections of the first-year Lawyering Process course or one section of the first-year course and one section of the upper-level Appellate Advocacy course.
  • Incorporate pedagogical techniques such as flipped classrooms and peer review.
  • Grade assignments with detailed feedback and hold student conferences.
  • Assist in teaching workshops in the Writing Hub for all students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to revise and enhance the legal writing curriculum.
  • Mentor students on writing-intensive projects and provide advising for litigation or clerkship careers.
