Job summary

Western Veterinary Partners offers veterinary externs a real-world learning experience with a $1,000 stipend and access to a network of over 350 practices across the United States.

Externs work closely with supervising veterinarians, gain exposure to client communication, case histories, and surgical procedures, and have opportunities to explore small animal, mixed animal, dental, and exotic services as part of their clinical year.

Qualifications

• Learning opportunities in practice management including client communication and case histories.
• Development of treatment plans, diagnostics, and in-house lab skills.
• Observation/assistance or performance of surgical procedures including dental work.

Responsibilities

• Work with supervising veterinarians to gain real-world externship experience across clinical areas.

Western Veterinary Partners externship program allows students to gain valuable real-world experience by taking what you’ve learned in the classroom and bringing it to the clinic. Veterinary Students in any grade can apply for an externship with a WVP Practice as part of their clinical year externship blocks or for informal externship experience.

What you will learn:

• Working closely with the supervising veterinarian you will gain experience in all areas of practice management including; client communication - gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, reviewing estimates; Ownership of cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, managing and performing in house labs; Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental procedures; and overall medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice learn communication skills, time management skills, fiscal responsibilities, record keeping, and relationship building with the medical team, support staff, and clients.*
