Job summary

Western Veterinary Partners offers a student externship program across multiple Indiana practices, delivering real-world clinical experience by applying classroom knowledge to the clinic.

Veterinary students in any year can apply for externships as part of their clinical year blocks or informal externship experiences, with benefits including a $1,000 stipend and opportunities to learn ownership of cases, discuss treatment plans, and observe or participate in surgeries.

Qualifications

• Veterinary students in any grade can apply for an externship with a WVP Practice.

Responsibilities

• Gaining experience in client communication, taking patient histories, performing physical exams, and reviewing estimates.
• Owning cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, and managing in-house labs.
• Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental work.
• Developing overall medical management skills for patients and building relationships with the medical team, staff, and clients.

What you will learn:

• Working closely with the supervising veterinarian you will gain experience in all areas of practice management including; client communication - gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, reviewing estimates; Ownership of cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, managing and performing in house labs; Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental procedures; and overall medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice learn communication skills, time management skills, fiscal responsibilities, record keeping, and relationship building with the medical team, support staff, and clients.*
