Job description

Position Summary

The primary role of the Direct Support Professional (DSP) is to work alongside the people we support to help them achieve their Personal Outcomes. This includes working with them to develop daily living, professional, and decision‑making skills while also supporting their overall health and safety. The role requires the ability to speak, read, and write in English at a level sufficient to complete required training, understand and follow support plans, communicate with care teams and providers, accurately document services and patient information, and comply with health and safety standards.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Essential Functions
  • Work with the people we support to help them identify and realize their personal life goals.
  • Advocate on behalf of the people we support in a variety of situations.
  • Teach new life skills to the people we support.
  • Promote health and safety in partnership with the people we support.
  • Assist the people we support to overcome barriers and challenges in establishing and maintaining a network of relationships and valued social roles.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop service plans that aid the person in achieving their personal life goals.
  • Provide positive behavior support as necessary.
  • Prevent, recognize, and report abuse toward the people we support.
  • Accurately document service provision, daily notes, and other required information.
  • Promote and support community involvement for the people we support.
  • Transport clients to locations outside the home, such as physicians’ offices or outings, using a motor vehicle.
  • Perform other healthcare‑related tasks as needed.
  • Ensure that all required documentation (paper and electronic) is completed and processed appropriately, in a timely manner, and meets quality and compliance thresholds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Residential Setting Essential Functions (additional)
  • Administer bedside or personal care as needed (OPWDD Only).
  • Assist with personal care and hygiene as needed.
  • Care for individuals during periods of incapacitation, family disruption, or convalescence, providing companionship, personal care, or help in adjusting to new lifestyles.
  • Perform housekeeping duties such as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes or dishes, or running errands.
  • Plan, shop for, or prepare nutritious meals or assist individuals in planning, shopping for, or preparing nutritious meals.

  • Meet all safety training requirements; adhere to all safety policies and report any unsafe conditions; take measures to prevent accidents and eliminate conditions that pose a safety or health risk.
  • Meet all job requirements for participating in or delivering training.
  • Adhere to FREE’s standard of ethical behavior as outlined in the Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct and applicable laws and regulations.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience: Experience performing related job duties is preferred.
  • Specialized Training, Licenses, Certifications: Not required; training will be provided upon hire as needed.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities:
    • Functional proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Proficient computer skills preferred.
    • Proficient writing skills with grasp of basic grammar and spelling.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with flexibility, keeping others informed and anticipating needs is essential.
    • Must be efficient, well organized, and have excellent communication skills.
  • Other Requirements:
    • 18 years of age or older.
    • Valid Driver’s License and satisfy criteria to be a driver for the agency required.
    • Based on business needs, loss of driving privileges may result in change of work location, shift, weekly hours, or termination of employment.
Work Environment

This role is performed in-person; travel in an agency vehicle is required from agency drivers.

Physical Requirements
  • Required to sit, walk and stand for a prolonged period of time (at least 8 hours).
  • Required to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or stand on a stool as needed.
  • Required to lift 50 pounds at a time.
