Job summary

The Salvation Army Lodge in Chicago is seeking a dedicated childcare assistant to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children under 6 while parents attend classes. Under supervision of the Social Services Manager, you will supervise volunteers, create engaging activities, monitor safety, and maintain open communication with parents, with CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

DEPARTMENT MISSION

To support the full mission of The Salvation Army by providing compassionate, professional service to the families residing at the Lodge and in the community in a team-focused manner with the entire Lodge staff.

OUTCOMES

Provide a safe environment for children during the time parents attend classes at The Evangeline Booth Lodge.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain a safe drop-in center environment for children under the age of 6.
• Oversee the safety of children at the center.
• Create educational and fun activities for the children.
• Ensure that the children’s needs are met, including but not limited to changing diapers, toileting, appropriate snacks and access to toys.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Under the general supervision of the Social Services Manager with minimal freedom to plan, schedule and carry out responsibilities within established polices and guidelines.

This individual relates to and interacts with a wide range of contacts both within and outside the Salvation Army, including staff, Officers, parents, and children. In these contacts this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated based on how effective the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Education: Formal education/training in child development is preferred.
• Experience: Previous experience in child care preferred.

COMPETENCIES

• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
• A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in lights of changing job situations/priorities.
• Ability to communicate clearly in English with children and parents.
• Certification in CPR and First Aid.

• This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
• This individual will keep the Social Services Manager and Case Managers informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
• This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

• This position is required to do light to moderate physical work and must have be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs.
• In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to interact and care for children.
• The work environment for this position includes a nursery/child care environment with a moderate to high noise level.
