Job summary

GTS seeks a Drop Bury Technician to install and maintain low-voltage broadband fiber optic or coaxial cables buried underground at residential, commercial, and business sites. You will bring your own equipment and perform trenching, duct work, and cable pulling to meet project requirements.

Candidates should have 1–2 years in drop bury field experience, pass background checks, be insured and bonded, and own the required vehicle and tools.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years in drop bury field experience.
• Ability to pass required drug and background screening.

• Owned vehicle and required equipment.
• Experience in Utility Locating.
• Knowledge of highway traffic control standards.
• Reading and interpreting Fiber maps and/or CATV design prints.

Job description

The Drop Bury Technician duties include installation and maintenance of low-voltage broadband fiber optic cables, or coaxial cables buried underground in residential, business, and commercial job sites.

Primary Responsibilities

• Providing own equipment for production of job requirements
• Responsible for operating utility locater and place paint lines, or place flags of utility lines including electrical, fiber optic, gas, water, and sewer lines to ensure safe trenching activities.
• Read the job layout including valves and meters that may or may not have been located.
• Operating trenching equipment, duct work laying, cable pulling, and completing driveway and sidewalk boring.
• Maintain bore logs
• Read blueprints organization of materials and other resources as necessary to complete excavation requirements, which may include the use of basic hand tools
• Restore customer lawns, sidewalks, landscaping back to original conditions to maintain effective working relationships with those affected.

Requirements

Job Requirements:

• 1-2 years in drop bury field experience
• Ability to pass required drug and background screening
• Insured and Bonded (requirements provided)
• Owned vehicle and required equipment

Experience (preferred):

• Utility Locating
• Drill/bore in both standard and high-risk areas, such as areas with live utilities.
• Operate trenching equipment or use hand tool to trench or bore cable lines.
• Listen to and implement directions
• Knowledge of:
  • Highway traffic control standards
  • Operation and maintenance of all equipment
  • Health and safety regulations, practices and procedures
  • Reading and interpreting Fiber maps and/or CATV design prints

Technical Skills:

• Use the tools required for maintaining and servicing machinery
• Diagnose and/or relay any problems to a certified repair technician
• Read and interpret construction and engineering plans
• Research land and plat information and communicate design prints
• Sketch and record field notes and computations field as-builts
• Perform and/or instruct entry level skills and practices as required

Physical Requirements:

• Must be in good physical condition with the ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 60-70 pounds including body weight, equipment, tools and boxes
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces
• Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather and in the near proximity to vehicular traffic
• May be required to work long or unpredictable hours
• Exposure to varying temperatures as work is primarily outside.
• Noise levels are moderate to heavy.
• Work in different types of terrain including water, sand, and dirt.
• Varying degrees of light as work may begin early morning and continue in the evenings and overnight.
