Job summary

Island Driving School in New York, NY seeks a patient, safety-minded Driving Instructor to provide hands-on behind-the-wheel instruction. You’ll help teens and adults build confidence, master vehicle handling, and navigate real-world traffic scenarios while upholding DMV standards.

You’ll teach defensive driving, right-of-way rules, and basic vehicle maintenance, maintaining calm, supportive guidance and providing constructive feedback to students and parents.

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Experience as driving instructor or teaching preferred, but training is available.
• Strong communication and teaching skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide structured, one-on-one behind-the-wheel driving lessons tailored to each student.
• Teach safety habits, defensive driving techniques, vehicle maintenance basics, and right-of-way rules.
• Maintain a calm and controlled environment inside the training vehicle at all times.
• Assess student progress and deliver constructive feedback to students and parents/guardians.
• Guide students through maneuvers required to pass their official state road exams.

Whether you are teaching teenagers or adults, your goal is to transform nervous beginners into licensed, responsible motorists.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide structured, one‑on‑one behind‑the‑wheel driving lessons tailored to each student's learning pace.
• Teach critical safety habits, defensive driving techniques, vehicle maintenance basics, and right‑of‑way rules.
• Maintain a calm and controlled environment inside the training vehicle at all times.
• Assess student progress objectively, delivering constructive feedback to both students and their parents or guardians.
• Guide students safely through the maneuvers required to pass their official state road exams.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Licensure: Valid driver’s license with a pristine driving record (no major violations or recent accidents).
• Experience: Prior experience as a driving instructor or in a teaching/coaching capacity is highly preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
• Skills: Exceptional communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
• Traits: Tremendous patience, adaptability, and strong problem‑solving abilities under pressure.
• Background Check: Ability to pass standard state background screening and medical examinations as required for commercial drivers or instructors
• Written test and teaching test: You will be required to pass a written test and teaching road test with the DMV to become certified
