Driver Testing Examiner
Position Summary

The Driver Testing Examiner is responsible for administering State of Michigan automobile road skills tests to unlicensed drivers in accordance with Michigan Secretary of State standards. This role evaluates applicants’ ability to safely operate a motor vehicle through pre-test inspections, basic control skills testing, and on-road driving assessments, while ensuring a safe, fair, and consistent testing environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Administer automobile road skills tests to unlicensed drivers on behalf of the State of Michigan, following established testing procedures and scoring standards
  • Conduct required pre-test activities, including applicant verification, documentation review, and vehicle safety inspections
  • Evaluate applicants during basic control skills exercises and on-road driving tests, accurately observing, scoring, and documenting performance
  • Provide clear, standardized instructions to applicants throughout the testing process
  • Ensure the safety of applicants, vehicles, pedestrians, and the general public during all testing activities
  • Complete scoring forms, certificates, and required documentation accurately and in a timely manner
  • Provide appropriate post-test feedback to applicants in a professional and objective manner
  • Adhere to all State of Michigan policies, testing protocols, and reporting requirements
  • Maintain professionalism, consistency, and impartiality throughout the testing process
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed in an office, outdoors and in vehicles, often for extended periods
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and remaining alert for long periods
  • Ability to visually observe driving behaviors, traffic conditions, and potential safety hazards
  • Must be able to safely position oneself around moving vehicles and testing courses
Schedule & Flexibility
  • Examiners are able to set their own schedules within approved testing availability
  • Position may include weekday, evening, or weekend testing depending on demand
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with a clean or acceptable driving record
  • Strong knowledge of safe driving practices and traffic laws
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and objective in evaluative or high-stress situations
  • Basic to intermediate computer proficiency, including the ability to complete electronic forms, data entry, and scheduling systems
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized procedures precisely
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • If selected, candidates must successfully complete required training and certification through the State of Michigan prior to administering road skills tests
Preferred Qualifications, but Not Required
  • Prior experience in driver education, testing, instruction, law enforcement, or transportation safety
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with state testing or regulatory environments
