POSITION OVERVIEW

The Operations Supervisor – Collections leads the day-to-day performance of an assigned collections operation, translating the daily route plan into on-time, in-full service. This is a field-first role — at least 50% of the week is spent riding routes, coaching drivers in real time, and resolving issues before they become customer complaints or safety events.

Working closely with the Collections Manager, this role owns five outcomes that drive the business: routes run on schedule, drivers stay compliant, contamination gets caught and corrected, missed pickups get resolved same day, and every incident is reported and documented. Success in this role looks like a crew that runs safely, on time, and with minimal rework - with problems caught in the field, not discovered by dispatch or the customer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Confirm the daily game plan (routes, assignments, truck/driver pairings) is set and communicated vis the Planner.

Plan the operation at least a week in advance.

Proactively address delays - traffic, equipment, staffing - before they cascade into missed service.

Work with dispatch/CSR team to ensure issues are resolved in real time with minimal customer

Verify every driver completes pre-trip and post-trip inspections

Confirm required lunch breaks are taken as legally mandated.

Audit timecards for correct job code usage and correct errors before payroll processing.

Report and document all incidents, near-misses, and vehicle defects the same day they occur.

Lead initial incident response on scene and ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and on time.

Reinforce safety protocols and PPE compliance during route checks and driver coaching.

The Operations Supervisor will be responsible for meeting department Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) once they are established. KPI metrics and targets are currently in development - likely tied to the core outcomes above (route execution, compliance, contamination, missed pickups, and safety) - and this section will be updated with specific measures and targets as they are finalized.

KEY COMPETENCIES
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to coach drivers directly in the field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across drivers, dispatch, customer service, and management.
  • Working knowledge of waste management regulations, DOT/HOS requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Sound judgment and clear decision-making under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
  • Familiarity with route optimization and scheduling software preferred.
  • Proficient with relevant software for data tracking, reporting, and timecard review.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED & DESIRED EXPERIENCE

Valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License).

High school diploma or equivalent.

Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment and respond to operational issues in real time.

Ability to be on call for emergencies or urgent route issues outside normal hours.

Prior experience directly supervising drivers or route crews.

Experience in waste management, collections, or a related logistics/route-based industry.

Additional education, training, or certifications in waste management, logistics, or safety.

PHYSICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Field-based role with frequent travel to route locations throughout the shift.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, heavy equipment, and waste collection environments.
  • Requires physical activity including walking, standing, bending, and occasional lifting.
  • Schedule may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends as operational needs require.
