Job summary

The Austin Centers for Exceptional Students is seeking a Transportation Specialist to safely move students on scheduled routes and during special excursions, using non-CDL vehicles as needed. You will ensure vehicle readiness and student safety during loading, transit, and unloading.

Responsibilities include documenting daily mileage and conditions, conducting pre-trip inspections, and communicating effectively with parents, teachers, and staff while maintaining orderly and secure transportation

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform technical tasks and maintain safety practices.
  • Certification in first aid/CPR is required.
  • Licensed to operate school buses and related equipment.
  • Physical ability for lifting and movement.
  • Ability to communicate in English with staff and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares documentation for written support and information.
  • Drives district vehicles to transport students over scheduled routes and trips.
  • Assesses incidents and emergencies to determine resolutions.
  • Develops communication with parents, students, teachers, and dispatchers.
  • Fuels and performs routine vehicle maintenance and pre-trip inspections.
  • Performs first aid as necessary.
  • Monitors students during transit to maintain order and safety.
  • Maintains vehicle cleanliness and safety checks.
  • Performs nonviolent crisis prevention interventions.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation.

The Austin Centers for Exceptional Students is a multifaceted special education program designed for students with emotional disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, specific learning disabilities, or other educational challenges. Job Summary

This position is responsible for transporting students on scheduled routes and to/from special excursions; ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensuring the safety of students during transport, loading, and unloading from buses/vehicles; driving non-CDL vehicles.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. daily mileage and condition reports, incident/accident reports, inspections, disciplinary and positive behavior reports, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Drives district vehicles to transport regular education and/or special education students over scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution.
  • Develops communication skills to communicate with parents, students, teachers, administrators, other drivers, dispatchers, etc., for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.
  • Drives non-CDL vehicles to transport students to/from school in a safe and timely manner.
  • Fuels assigned vehicle (e.g. oil, water, fuel) to maintain the vehicle in a safe operating condition.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, exterior conditions) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meet state requirements.
  • Performs first aid as necessary to meet the immediate health care needs of passengers.
  • Learns the process of monitoring students and passengers during transit to maintain order and ensure passenger safety.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles (interior and exterior) including cleaning floors, windows, seats, and vandalism checks to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation.
  • Performs nonviolent crisis prevention intervention techniques and restraints to de-escalate crises and provide safe care and security for all.
  • Other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications, Work Environment, and Abilities
  • Ability to perform technical tasks with potential need to upgrade skills; safety practices knowledge; certification in first aid/CPR; ability to be licensed to operate school buses and related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and fine finger dexterity. Typical work requires 75% sitting, 20% walking, 5% standing, with exposure to temperature extremes and potential risk of injury or illness.
  • Basic math skills, ability to read manuals, write documents, and present information; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures; ability to read maps; ability to speak, read, understand, and write English.
  • Ability to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with others in various circumstances, work with data using defined processes, and operate equipment using defined methods.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals; handle data; and use job-related equipment; problem-solving to identify issues and create action plans.
  • Problem-solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; problem-solving with equipment is moderate to significant.
  • Specific ability-based competencies include attention to detail, good judgment, ability to work without close supervision, meeting deadlines, and effective communication in English.
