Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation, is seeking a Driver License Examiner to help applicants understand the rules of the road, assess driving ability, and issue license products in a full-time capacity.

You will evaluate vision and physical qualifications, review documents for authenticity, and provide guidance on renewals, transfers, and special licenses while upholding REAL ID and Title VI policies.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on evaluating driver license applicants and providing customer service at the Driver License Center. As a Driver License Examiner, you will perform the following duties:

• Exam Applicant Skills: Assess driving ability, physical qualifications, and vision results
• Check Vehicle Safety: Inspect vehicles for mechanical readiness and proper equipment
• Verify Documents: Review identity, residency, and citizenship records for authenticity
• Process Licensing Tasks: Complete applications, test results, and issue license products
• Support Customer Needs: Provide guidance on renewals, transfers, and specialty license requirements
• Maintain Standards: Follow all policies for customer service, REAL ID, fee waivers, and Title VI

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Work overtime and travel to other Driver License Centers when needed.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

• One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant ( Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration ); or
• Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public.

Special Requirements

• All positions require an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent and twenty-one years of age at the time of application.
• All positions require no suspensions or revocations of a driver’s license during the five year period immediately preceding employment.
• All employees in this job hired after February 28, 2022, are required to obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver’s license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment.
