Job summary

FedEx Freight in Pawtucket, RI seeks a CDL driver with dock duties and forklift experience to operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles. You will perform pre-trip inspections, secure freight, and handle documentation while complying with DOT regulations and safety policies.

You’ll communicate with Dispatch for delays, arrivals, and equipment issues, assist customers, and, if needed, perform road-driver tasks. Hourly pay ranges from $26.23 to $31.23 with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Must hold CDL Class A or CLP before entering job classification.
• Must meet DOT regulatory requirements and have a valid MVR.
• Ability to perform basic math and basic communication.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer including doubles and/or straight trucks.
• Perform pre/post/inter-trip safety inspections of equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies as needed.
• Handle freight using forklift, pallet jack, or hand truck.
• Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when required.
• Complete required documentation and reports.
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain records.
• Comply with hazmat regs and placarding as needed.
• Communicate with Dispatch about delays, arrivals, and issues.
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
• Assist customers with pick-up or delivery needs and generate leads for sales.
• Perform road driver or freight handler duties when needed.
• Chain vehicle tires and comply with laws and policies.

Job description

Position Overview

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

Essential Functions

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
• Basic written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member
