Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc. is seeking a driver/operator to proficiently operate tractor-trailer combinations and perform dock duties. Starting pay is $25.64 per hour, with raises to $30.55 for qualified roles.

Responsibilities include pre-trip/post-trip inspections, trailer hookups, freight handling with forklifts/pallet jacks, load securing, and dispatch communications. CDL Class A or CLP is required, with DOT regulatory compliance and strong safety focus.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a class A CDL or a commercial learning permit (CLP).
  • Must have a clean MVR according to hiring standards.
  • Must meet DOT regulations and FMCSA requirements.
  • Ability to perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 100 pounds several times a day.

Responsibilities

  • Operate tractor-trailer, including doubles/straight trucks.
  • Perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections and safety checks.
  • Hook/unhook trailers and convertor dollies.
  • Handle freight with forklift or pallet jack.
  • Secure freight in trailers using pallets, straps, rope.
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight as needed.
  • Maintain required documentation and reports.
  • Communicate with Dispatch on delays or issues.
  • Provide internal and external customer service.
  • Assist customers with pickup or delivery needs.

Starting rate of pay $25.64/ hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
  • Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
  • Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
  • Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports
  • Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
  • Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
  • Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
  • Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
  • Chain vehicle tires, as required
  • Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification
  • Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations
  • Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather
  • Exposure to noise and vibration
  • Exposure to dust and diesel fumes
  • Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations
  • Hours may vary due to operational need
