Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc. is seeking a driver/operator who will operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles. The role includes non-driving duties such as forklift operations and dock work.

Qualifications

  • Must have Class A CDL or CLP before entering job classification
  • Must have acceptable MVR based on hiring standards
  • Must meet DOT regulatory requirements under 49 CFR for FMC
  • Ability to count and perform basic math
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to hook up and break down trailer sets requiring ~100 lbs lift
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight up to 100 lbs several times a week
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in/out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete training
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

Responsibilities

  • Operate tractor-trailer including doubles/straight trucks
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies
  • Handle freight with forklift, pallet jack, or hand truck
  • Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight as needed
  • Complete required documentation and reports
  • Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related records
  • Ensure hazmat placards match shipments according to DOT rules
  • Communicate with Dispatch regarding delays, equipment issues, etc.
  • Provide internal and external customer service
  • Determine pick-up/delivery needs with customers
  • Offer additional business leads to sales when possible
  • May perform road driver or freight handler duties when necessary
  • Chain vehicle tires as required
  • Comply with laws, regulations and company policies

Starting Rate of Pay: $ 25.64 per hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
  • Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
  • Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
  • Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports
  • Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
  • Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
  • Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
  • Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
  • Chain vehicle tires, as required
  • Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification
  • Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations
  • Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather
  • Exposure to noise and vibration
  • Exposure to dust and diesel fumes
  • Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations
  • Hours may vary due to operational need
