Job summary

Fundamentals LLC in Wisconsin seeks a responsible school bus driver to operate a designated route, transport students safely, and observe defensive driving practices. You will conduct daily vehicle inspections and ensure student safety during loading and unloading.

Shifts are AM and PM, with hours around 7:00 AM–9:00 AM and 2:00 PM–4:00 PM, plus 6:00 PM–8:00 PM. You will monitor student behavior, maintain order, and respond to emergencies with basic first aid when needed.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent GED.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a school vehicle along a designated route and pick up/discharge students.
  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the vehicle.

  • Determine actions in emergencies and administer first aid as needed.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections of vehicles and report any malfunctions.
  • Keep vehicles clean, fueled, and ready for operation.
  • Supervise loading/unloading of students, including those with special needs, ensuring safety.
  • Provide vehicle evacuation and safety instruction to staff and students.
  • Transport students and staff on field trips and meet schedules.
  • Operate seat belts, harnesses, and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of Director of Education and Director of Community Integration, operate a school vehicle over designated routes to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on a designated route; observe legal and non-aggressive defensive driving practices; perform regular safety inspections; ensure the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from vehicles.

Shifts are either AM (variable hours between 7:00 AM–9:00 AM and 2:00 PM–4:00 PM) or PM driver shifts (2:00 PM–4:00 PM and 6:00 PM–8:00 PM).

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operate a school vehicle along a designated route; pick up and discharge students in

accordance with time schedules; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.

  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the vehicle in accordance with policies related to disciplining students; enforce policies and procedures related to transportation of students.
  • Monitor student activities and behavior; reports observations and/or incidents (e.g., vehicle stop compliance, discipline, accidents, passenger inappropriate social behavior).
  • Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines;

administer first aid to passengers as needed.

  • Conduct required daily safety inspections of vehicles; inspect the interior, exterior and engine of vehicles to ensure safe operational condition; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required.
  • Maintain vehicles in a clean and safe operating condition; wash, sweep and clean the exterior, interior and windows of assigned vehicles; refuel, service and prepare vehicle for operation.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of students and students with special needs; assure students with special needs are seated safety and seat belts, harnesses and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
  • Provide vehicle evacuation and safety instruction to staff and students.
  • Transport students and staff on field trips or other events; meet scheduled departure and arrival times as assigned.
  • Operate equipment, including seat belts, harnesses and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Safe and defensive driving practices.
  • Proper operations of school vehicles.
  • Applicable Wisconsin motor vehicle codes and State traffic transportation laws, policies, guidelines and regulations.
  • Basic first aid procedures.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Designated vehicle routes, vehicle stops and traffic hazards.
  • Problems and concerns of students with special needs.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities is:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent GED.
  • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Licenses, Certifications and other Requirements:

  • Valid Wisconsin Class “A” or Class “B” driver’s license with a “P” endorsement.
  • Valid Wisconsin Class C driver’s license.
