Job summary

Boart Longyear is hiring for a Sonic Driller Assistant in the United States. You will support drilling crews with semi-skilled tasks, operate or assist with various equipment, and participate in safety and training programs while earning overtime and bonuses.

The role includes long shifts, extensive travel, and opportunities to advance to roles like Driller Assistant or Field Supervisor with pay bumps at milestones. Boart Longyear emphasizes safety, training, and a strong team culture.

Qualifications

  • Willing to travel by plane or car to sites across multiple states.
  • Able to commute long distances for shifts (up to 300 miles).
  • Willing to work in remote locations and in all-weather elements.
  • Willing to work 12‑hour shifts for 14‑20 days at a time.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization.
  • Must pass background and drug screening.
  • Must pass a Physical Functional Fitness Evaluation.
  • High School diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of directly related drilling or heavy labor experience.

Responsibilities

  • Hauling supplies to and from the drill site.
  • Manual material handling.
  • Mixing drilling fluids.
  • Adding/Removing rods to/from drill string.
  • Sample collection and labeling (bags/cores).
  • Building chip trays.
  • Assist in rigging up/down and moving to new drill locations.
  • Fueling site equipment and conducting preventive maintenance.
  • Complete daily site inspections, mast inspections and pre-shift inspections on all equipment.
  • Provide site inductions to all visitors.
  • Maintain an accurate parts inventory.
  • Maintain general condition of and optimum life of equipment and tooling.
  • Other duties as assigned by Driller/Field Supervisor.
  • May train new drillers in a safe environment when needed.

Responsibilities

Provide semi-skilled labor-intensive assistance for drilling crews. This could include the operation of various types of vehicles, equipment/machinery and other tasks including:

  • Hauling supplies to and from the drill site
  • Manual material handling
  • Mixing drilling fluids
  • Making connections — Adding/Removing rods to/from drill string.
  • Sample Collection — Ensure bags/cores are labeled correctly, are legible, kept in numeric order according to designated footages and closed securely.
  • Building chip trays.
  • Assist in rigging up/down and moving to new drill locations.
  • Fueling of site equipment and conducting preventative maintenance (Oil Changes, Greasing, Fueling, etc.)
  • Complete daily site inspections, mast inspections and pre-shift inspections on all equipment.
  • Responsible for providing site inductions to all visitors.
  • Responsible for maintaining an accurate parts inventory.
  • Responsible for general condition of and obtaining optimum life out of all site equipment and tooling.
  • Other duties as assigned by Driller/Field Supervisor
  • Also, at times, you may be responsible for the training of new driller assistant in a safe environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Willing to travel by plane or car to worksites throughout Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and other states where we do business.
  • Able to commute long distances for shifts (300 miles)
  • Willing to work in remote locations and in all-weather elements
  • Willing to work at job sites for an extended period of time, 12 hour shifts for 14-20 days at a time
  • Must have a valid U.S. Driver’s License
  • Must have valid U.S. Work Authorization
  • Must pass background and drug screening
  • Must pass a Physical Functional Fitness Evaluation
  • High School diploma or GED or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of directly related experience in drilling AND/OR
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in related positions such as: construction laborer, heavy laborer, mechanic, and mechanical work.
